In “Carrie and Lowell,” Sufjan Stevens is a child again or, more specifically, the child character in the family of man drama that often but not always centers on the story of love given, or love forsaken, but isn’t that the same thing to the poet? That the love Stevens sings about having left or given or been born to–thank you, Carrie–is a perceptible wound not only on the singer’s throat, but his sleeve: he wears love’s incomprehensibility, and the deep incomprehensibility of being a son, like a backing vocal on “Carrie and Lowell,” which is also filled with colors, hearts, trees, conclusions, and beginnings,

The In a Hometown album represents the early points of my songwriting and music career.  These are the very first songs I wrote and recorded. It’s mainly about the different feelings and experiences – good or bad – that come with growing up. I feel like a lot of people will relate to In a Hometown.”

The album’s title track In a Hometown is meant to look back and reflect on all the crazy times we had in Oklahoma.  The lyrics describe everything that happens while growing up in a small hometown and what I focused on. Often, my method for getting over a girl was finding trouble and kickin’ back with the guys, which I think is a relatable story.  There's a lot about finding your way through life as things change, relationships change, and you walk your path of ups and downs.

Asthmatic Kitty Records is an independent record label that was co-founded by Lowell Brams and his stepson, singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens, in 1999. Since its founding, AKR has released albums by a variety of artists, including Lily & Madeleine, My Brightest Diamond and Helado Negro, and is currently home to Sufjan Stevens, Angelo De Augustine, Denison Witmer and The Welcome Wagon. 

Asthmatic Kitty was named after Sara, an orange and white tabby who wandered out of the woods pregnant and starving near Holland, Michigan in 1994. For fourteen years she brought joy as a beloved friend to Lowell, enjoying a happy life despite her initial hardships. Her asthma improved after moving west to New Mexico and Wyoming, where she lived out her days as an asthmatic kitty in name only.
