Naphta has been most recently known for exploring fantasy worlds as a member of Gaijin Blues, but anima mundi is as important to him as the animation. His Tańce debut was produced in search of universal sounds that can express sadness and helplessness in the face of the incoming climate catastrophe we brought on ourselves. “Dom strawiło” means “the house burned down”. All that’s left is to dance in stupor to a melancholic tune.

Naphta has recorded the rawest EP in Tańce catalog so far, looking for certain emotions in the textures of folk instruments and songs. “Czorta pląsy” mixes contemporary dance rhythms with shreds of vocal samples and dramatic violins. “Dom strawiło” has a lively sound thanks to an extravaganza of tiny percussion sounds. It’s hard to call it carefree though, with a haunting sample the track took its name from and processed ghostlike ocarina turned into an ominous cloud of sound. „Rejwach na kurhanach” blends a female choir with broken beats, while „Pokrzyk” speeds up the tempo to 140 bpm. This could be club music by Polish immigrants from Newark.

Naphta is an alias of Paweł Klimczak, one of the most active people of Polish music scene, a producer and a DJ, an instrumentalist, a journalist and a radio host. Naphta records club music, jazz, and electronic music inspired by Japanese pop culture in Gaijin Blues.

RADIO.D59B / ROUGH CUTS #1 w/ Yoni Mayraz

Latin tinged jazz grooves with a sharp edge on "Dead Silence" from EABS forthcoming '2061' album on Astigmatic. Another essential release from our favourite Polish jazz ensemble. 

If one was to interpret the whole output of EABS in general, an inquisitive listener would notice that each subsequent album stems from the previous one. The overtones are similar and they can be treated as variations on the same theme. The only thing that changes is the background of the story. It is all about life and death, the beginning and the end of the world, and the role of human beings entangled in all this existentially. Following the futurism lessons from Sun Ra, the band travels to the year 2061, continuing their mission in space in the company of a living legend, Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski.

"ALL THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS – EXCEPT EUROPA. ATTEMPT NO LANDING THERE." – this was the ominous message from the mythical Monolith of Arthur C. Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey. The quote became a metaphor for the situation the EABS crew found themselves in when the pandemic hit. It was not only Europe that became inaccessible, the whole world shut down. A reflection emerged that only empathy and cooperation could save humanity. We will not be able to face the greater threat that may come from the outside together by fighting wars among ourselves on Earth. A similar analogy can be seen in Arthur C. Clarke's book series, which was made even more famous by Stanley Kubrick with his iconic screen adaptation, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Released in 1986, the third part of the series has served as an inspiration for the fourth EABS album titled 2061, a soundtrack to the film that hasn't been made yet.

2061 will be released via Astigmatic Records in digital, CD and LP formats, in both regular and limited editions (including white vinyl and a B2 poster designed by Patryk Hardziej).

Our favourite psych jazz rockers, Cykada, share “Fallacy”, an exclusive cut from their forthcoming second album, ‘Metamorphosis’, released Friday 22 November on Astigmatic Records. 

“Fallacy” is a prime example of the development of Cykada’s sound, since their debut album, into a heavier amalgamation of jazz, folk, rock and sound system and UK dancefloor influences. 

The new album was recorded whilst the pandemic was in full swing in the UK. Bass guitarist Jamie Benzies, now on vocals too, was joined by Tim Doyle, aka producer/multi instrumentalist Chimyuo, on drums, James Mollison, also of Ezra Collective, on tenor sax, on trumpet Axel Kaner-Lidstromo of Levitation Orchestra, Tilé Gichigi-Lipere on keys & electronics, Rob Milne on various wind instruments, and Javi Perez on electric guitar.
