Since its inception, electronic music has stood apart in the music world for its willingness to push the limits of musical experimentation and innovation. Nothing is more rebellious, more punk rock, than the courage to throw the rulebook out the window, step into uncharted territory, and play by ear. Few moments in music history epitomize this revolutionary spirit as perfectly as the rise and domination of dubstep.

The early 2010s changed the sound of not only electronic music and dance music, but of everything from pop music to experimental acts. Dubstep had arrived, and its impact was undeniable. Now we can look back on that pivotal moment with a knowledge and a nostalgia that only time can forge.

Mendum’s newest release, “Tell Me Why”, is at once a heart-wrenching plea, a celebration of sweaty nights in the club remembered only dreamily, and a brief lesson in the evolution of dubstep over this last decade. Let it transport you back to that first relentless rhythm or infectious bass line that unlocked in you the desire to create your own music.
