The song "Yiannis, Your Handkerchief" is perhaps the most emblematic folk song of the diaspora. With a handkerchief symbolically wiping sweat, blood, and dirt from the hard work done to survive abroad, "Yiannis" says he washed it in five rivers, but it was so stained that it didn't get clean, only dyed them. In the "desolate foreign lands," each Yiannis is usually a frightened outcast, hidden from social life in ghettos and his humble room. In this rendition, the band PAGAN also incorporated an original melody in a slow rhythm, where the bagpipe weeps for the lost years of the diaspora that won't come back, but can serve as a reminder to future generations that "where there is land and homeland," without humanity, solidarity, and understanding, does not exist.

I recorded this tidal pool just above the tidal line. The sound of the waves are adding a certain sense of place to the recording. The small molluscs and a couple of very small hermit crabs were active grazing the sea weed. Occasionally one investigated the hydrophone. There are some very small fish swimming in the pool too.
I was using a JRF Hydrophone connected to a Zoom F3 at 32 Bit

Use headphones for this run. These are fields recordings heard in the Riifles & Garbage Podcast Second Edition. There is a stream called Bogdanka, a VLF radio grab, the water under a beaver's dam recorded with hydrophones and from above, the Warta river, a hydrophone recording of a pond in Solacz in summer, a pond in Wilson's Park in the winter (mostly carp rustling against the miccrophone cables I think, various birds in Poland and a cage full of baby chickens at a market in Tasnad, Romania. There may be other things in there too but I have to listen again to be more precise. Feel free to ask in comments.

Very little wind, -5 °C. Many ice crystals in the water smoothen the surface. Small waves run into the shore. A low-frequency rumble (fighter jets) creates an unpleasant feeling.

From dusk to dawn with two pairs of cranes and one or two single male contenders. In this recording you will hear almost infrasound (80-200 Hz) growls and heavy panting as the males chase each other in the wetland and of course the trumpeting of cranes through the night. An amazing experience to be this close. Huddunge, Uppsala. April 9, 2024.

This antsy re-purposing of hydrophones allows some access to the frenetic hyper-organizational instinct grid (or griddles) of the insectomaniacal realm, inasmuch as it shows up as frictional clamberings, clicks and munching and well, who knows what they were really doing: I placed the microphones and kept my distance.
