AI-31 sees the debut release from a new collaboration between Samuel van Dijk (Netherlands) and Rasmus Hedlund (Finland). Both key proponents to the scene in Northern Europe, they come together with mutual understanding and a common vision to sound. Dialog acts as a conversational exchange that sees the interplay of dynamic frequencies, evocative imagery and contemporary sonic art. Spread across four sides, the album as a whole exists as a kind of metaphysical process, eternally growing and contracting — change is the only constant, marked by a continuous progression of sound and space.  

Expansive, deep, and at moments arresting, Dialog unfolds with sweeping soundscapes and shimmers with tactile sonic details. A chasmic rift of scintillating drone structures, each layer exposes a series of ever-deeper shades. In a play of dynamic dualities, the pair harnesses both earthly materials as well as access to more ethereal dimensions in the music. Side A begins with sub-terrestrial ruptures, gestating in a process of constant elemental changes. Rattling hits sputter amongst a state of nascent chaos, yet continues to be maintained in self-regulating stasis. Side B sets a more introspective tone, whispering with ghostly artefacts and bubbling synth lines, before building into a driving energy of layered field recordings and mechanistic timbres. The essence of form continues to be contested, until it subsides into momentary calm on side C. A cleansing period of soft drones float into the space and the pace slows, washing away remnants of past. The journey continues with side D’s conclusion - a solemn contour that reaches its internal extent, to then finally return to its source.

Victor died a day in September 2019. He died young, but he had used his life well. A life he from early age documented in music and texts with curiosity and humour, imagination and bravery, a life in the range between the present and the past, departure and return, loneliness and a sense of belonging, dissonance and harmony.

In the 2000’s Victor was a part of the bands Alexi Jungle, Figaro and Pale Corners, while he in the 2010’s mainly worked with his solo music project Koenigsfrost and as a DJ at several clubs and the festival Way Out West. Yttrandet – signifying both “judgment” and “testimony” – was his last music project.

In his music we can still hear his expressions, his soft irony and his accurate vision. The time we shared is not just a question of years and days, it is a continuous movement. We who live on remain with our memories and your legacy through your music.

In the texts he wrote, Victor often shows a touch of dreamlike surrealism as in this dream:

The sun is about to set. I am alone in the woods. The body aches and the worry escalates from grinding noise to a tide. I fall asleep and when I wake up everything is bright, and the worry has disappeared. Now I see the wall a couple of hundred metres in front of me. Black and shining as polished granite, cut in one piece, it reaches from the west to the east without interruption or opening. A wall. Two creatures, a giant and a dwarf, are standing in the shadow of the wall and they are doing something. I explain that I am in a hurry, that I must go forward. The dwarf says ”Forward?! There is no longer any forward. Forward ends here!” Now I can see that the giant is building an enormous ladder. My curiosity takes hold of me. ”Why is he building a ladder?” The dwarf looks at me, first suspiciously, but soon he exclaims ”My name is Gabriel!” ”But what is this ladder?” ”Ah, that one. The last one collapsed, it was too old, so Jacob here builds a new one.” I ask if they also need to get over the wall. ”Over the wall? No, no, we are going back up.” The dwarf points up at the sky and continues: ”You will not get over the wall. You have to wait until Jacob is finished, just like everybody else.”

Mind-blowing Azeri electric guitar from Mountains of Tongues! Since the late 1960s the electric guitar has been adopted and transformed by musicians across the Caucasus. Inspired by traditional genres, such as the courtly mugham and the songs and tunes of ashiq bards, guitarists in Azerbaijan have developed a unique sound, new techniques, and styles of playing. Through studio tracks, field recordings, and bootlegs of live performances, this mixtape is meant to serve as an introduction to just some of the different eras, styles, and musicians that have helped to define the genre. The mix is also coincides with the release of a tape of archival recordings by the Azeri guitarist Rüstəm Quliyev on Mountains of Tongues label: https://mountainsoftongues.bandcamp.com/releases.

Compiled by Julien Thiennot of Afghan Records Gallery, this mixtape features a selection of records, radio, and movies from Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Like the Portuguese saudade heard in the music of Cabo Verde or Brazil, these recordings evoke a deep emotional state or feeling, a kind of mixture of nostalgia, melancholy, and hope, heard across different musical genres and styles of the region.

Raw and remixed field recordings of gong orchestras throughout southeast Asia. Recorded, assembled, and remixed by Yasuhiro Morinaga for Radio is a Foreign Country. Yasuhiro Morinaga is a sound artist and filmmaker living in Tokyo. After graduating Tokyo University of the Arts, Yasuhiro has carried out field recording expeditions documenting the origins of musical instruments and the soundscapes of shamanic healing rituals throughout southeast Asia (see www.the-concrete .org).
