Astrophonica welcomes Lewis James to the fold with the Shapeshifter EP. A professional sound designer and life long musician, London-based Lewis James first appeared on the label via the Gradients compilation in early 2017. With this EP he celebrates his love of jungle and drum & bass across four tracks that combine analogue and digital processes to create what he calls, "a spaced out identity, somewhere between science fiction and the dancefloor." 

The title track opens with a wide, cinematic and laid back feel -- floating arpeggios, processed guitars and bowed viol, effected vocals -- before living up to its name with a subtle switch towards tougher, rhythm driven movement. "Ferro" picks up the action further with an homage to the classic drum & bass formula of combining starkly different moods between the intro and the core of the track. Here it all begins with a bright, lush opening, a gradual walk into the light before descending into the pits of a smoky, 3am dancefloor with punchy breaks and a call and response between rubbery bass and grinding synth lines. Come back up for breath halfway through and then dive in again. 

On the B side, "Your Love Is A Power" aims for the sweet spot between classic jungle rinse out and catchy, ear-worm pop. Built around a beautiful vocal performance from Dan Dans K, the track marries the energy of jungle -- the simplicity of an amen smashed over a reece bass -- with the emotional power of a top 40 pop song. It's simple but highly effective. The EP closes on a high note with "Turbo", a punishing beatdown of 808 drums and acid melodies with enough switches to keep the most adventurous of listeners of their toes. 

With the Shapeshifter EP, Astrophonica continues its exploration of cosmic electronic music. All four tracks display the evident love Lewis James has for the possibilities offered by the 160-170 tempo alongside a fascinating attention to detail and an ear for brilliant, cinematic moments.

After the success of their 'Something Strange' single earlier this year and their powerful contribution to the 'New Age Myths EP', Addictive Behaviour are proud to present another inspiring release from the technically gifted production trio known as Data 3.  

The opening track 'Fossil' unearths a meticulously engineered rhythm as Data 3 deliver another dose of their defining sound. Creeping in with a dusting of percussion and a pressure building kick-drum before rolling out a thick modulated bassline and aggressive growls, transporting you to another world.  This track is full of character, constantly switching and fascinating till the end. 

Canyon Dreams is next and cuts in fiercely with a solid metallic jungle beat to open up. Sinister tones build to a sharp drop characterized by an unsettling crackling synth that buzzes along like a swarm of killer bees. Interspersed with sticky drum breaks and tinged with eerie pad work, this is another beautifully crafted piece of work from a solid production outfit that are relentless in their output. 

Returning to the fold with two of their finest cuts of music, this production trio is solid and continue to define their imprint on the drum & bass scene.

It was late 2015 when Brazil's Level 2 and DJ Chap lit the fuse and sparked off the Alibi team-up. Individually, they were already well-established, but this move would take the levels even higher. Smashing into our consciousness with a huge set at SUNANDBASS in 2016, the new duo quickly built a reputation for being prime exponents of the future sound of Brazil. As testified to, if proof were needed, by them featuring on Hospital's 'Future Sound of Brazil EP' and contributing some of the stand out cuts on the recent 'Viva Brazil' album presented by DJ Patife. With a series of huge releases and download chart-topping success under their belt, including colabs with Command Strange and Disaszt, their 'Inception EP' comes loaded with anticipation.

Now, we've already seen these producers display multiple facets to their drum & bass. Influences of tech, liquid, jump-up, and more have peppered their output like 'Aftermath' and 'The Hornet EP'. So, of course, Alibi have taken the opportunity afforded by this five-track release to stretch out across sub-genre divisions once again.

As tension is ramped up from the stripped-back bass-weighted 'Knockout', through to the tech paranoia of 'Inception', you might imagine you know where this EP's going to take you. Then 'Greenline 02' comes along to wrong-foot you with with its dubby, subby tints melting into euphoric chords. 'Reizenstein' adds another hint of darkness, with vibes as shadow-shrouded as the meaning of the title. But then there's the switch-up of 'Morning Glory', an emotive fluid-soul roller which has that summer-night feeling encoded deep in its DNA.

Having been instrumental in bringing the D&B of Brazil to the world in the first place, the V Recordings camp is now intimately associated with its next stage of evolution. You see, with more styles and influences in the melting pot, the architecture is developing. And, globally-influenced but SÃ£o Paulo-rooted, Alibi's 'Inception EP' lays out the blueprint.

V Recordings presents ‘Said & Done’. Alibi’s debut album featuring DRS, Serum, Riya, Cleveland Watikiss, Lorna King, L-Side, MC Fats, T.R.A.C. and Sofi Mari. 

Colourful, effervescent, and energetic, the Brazilian drum & bass scene has given us some of the most distinctive production voices in the game. Including São Paulo's Level 2 and DJ Chap or, as they're known collectively, Alibi. 

“In each of the songs, we expressed our feelings and each song carries a unique message. The album itself talks about life. We all go through times where we fall and get hurt. Then we get up and we recycle. In every single situation: we learn.” - Alibi 

Alibi signed exclusively to V Recordings at the end of 2015, and this LP shares the characteristics held dearly by both the duo and the label. Weaving together threads from the duo's shared funk, soul, reggae, and hip hop influences with the drum 'n' bass tutelage of shared heroes like S.P.Y., Calibre, D-Bridge and the late Marcus Intalex, this is set to be the most complete statement of their musical vision so far. 

Each track from the album stands as an example of their impeccable production, starting with ‘Debris’ which is filled with cinematic textures and a sub-low reese typical to their sound. The album plays home to a handful of other lighter atmospheric pieces, including ‘Recycle’, ‘Destiny’, and 3 other tracks with Riya, Cleveland Watikiss and Lorna King, all gracing the booth with their vocals. The duo can effortlessly skip between sub-genres, shown by the tracks on the LP that would be more suited in a dark club at 5am, such as ‘Smash Through The City’ with Serum, L-Side & T.R.A.C., as well as the floor shaking ‘Scuffed’ – there’s a style to cater to everybody. 

With V Recordings celebrating their 25th anniversary, there really is no better time for Alibi to cement themselves as one of the crown jewels of the label and the scene as a whole.
