Piñon pine smoke drifts through my open window
Sharp and sweet like promises I used to believe
I drove through painted canyons where sandstone bleeds crimson
The scent of sage braids through my hair
Tangles with his cologne still on my jacket sleeve

Sun burns patterns into my forearms
Ancient walls whisper in languages 
older than the twenty-three years we built together
My easel rattles like unfinished business
Canvas stretched tight as silence
Virgin white against the chaos of my leaving

How do you trap infinity in a frame sixteen by twenty
How do you paint the sound of a marriage ending
Brushes shake everything I can't say

At the roadside stand an old woman appears
Eyes like polished obsidian seeing through my grief
You're painting the wrong thing she says
The canyon doesn't want to be captured
It wants to capture you
Her words sink into my ribs like red dust

In these painted canyon dreams
I taste colors I can't capture
Rust-red regret pooling in shadows
Ochre loneliness spreading thin
Cerulean promises I made to myself
Gold-threaded hope catching light like spider silk

These mesas clutch their secrets
The way I clutched our wedding photo until the glass cracked
Ancient stories in the stone make my diary look like child's scribbles
Desert spirits sleep in shadows cool as forgiveness
The canyon breathes with me now

They say the West is where you go to shed your skin
But here I find the same woman reflected in rock mirrors
Only smaller more honest luminous

Now my studio walls breathe with desert light
Forty-seven canvases holding fragments of one enormous truth
The real masterpiece was learning to taste regret without drowning
Learning to feel hope without grasping
Learning to be small enough to fit inside my own skin again

The journey painted me
Left me sun-weathered wind-carved luminous as morning breaking over stone

Sometimes when piñon smoke drifts through my window
I hear her voice
