Sofrito kicks off the new Island Series with a celebration of the vital dancefloor sounds of Cape Verde – a mixture of local Funana and Coladeira rhythms, Batuque percussion and psychedelic disco synths.

Hailing from the island of Sao Vicente and originally released in the early 80s, Dionisio Maio’s anthemic Corpim Sabe is stretched into a 12” mix by the Alma Negra collective – bringing the thumping bassline to the fore and tweaking the piano-led groove into a slice of cosmic Coladeira-disco perfection.

On the flip the dynamic Hide & Smile duo (aka Frankie Francis & Miles Cleret) splice an early track from trailblazing Santiago-based group Bulimundo into a percussive workout that prefigures the sounds of Kuduro and Coupé Decalé.
Os Kings (from the island of Sao Vicente) complete the EP with an ode to struggling youth, anchored by sweet guitars and a slick bassline.

Fact fans:
The Republic of Cape Verde is an island chain situated 500 km off the coast of Senegal. Uninhabited before Portuguese colonization in the 15th century, the country was a staging post for the transatlantic slave trade and occupies a unique cultural position between Africa, Europe and the Caribbean.
There are large Cape Verdean communities in Paris, Lisbon, Rotterdam and Boston and as a result the music of the French Caribbean (in particualr zouk) is extremely influential.
Extra fact:
One of the most popular drinks in Cape Verde is a pint of gin and tonic.

Songhoy Blues have announced details of the release of their debut album, Music In Exile, which is released on Transgressive Records on Monday 23rd February 2015.

Once one of the most prominent and powerful of Mali’s many ethnic groups, the Songhoy, who hail from the banks of the Niger River between the ancient cities of Timbuktu and Gao, have suffered a long slow decline since their apogee in the 6th and 17th centuries. Now largely living on the margins of the West African nation whose political and cultural life is dominated by the Bambara people of the south, they nonetheless retain a fierce pride in their history, beliefs and music.

Pourquoi Collectif ? Parce que ce sont des voix que vous connaissez bien ! Guizmo de Tryo// Gerome Briard Le Pied de la Pompe// Gari des Massilia Sound System//Alee, Mourad et Zeitoun de La Rue Ketanou .C’est également des musiciens Erwann Cornec (Basse) Le Pied de la pompe// Fred Mariolle (Guitare) No One Is Innocent// Max Raguin (Accordéon) Le P'tit Son // DJ ORDOEUVRE.
Pourquoi le chiffre 13 ? Parce que ce chiffre revient souvent autour du collectif.
C'est en 2013 que le Collectif a décidé de se remonter, avec  4 nouveaux venus : Gari, Max Raguin Fred Mariolle et DJ Ordoeuvre. On compte 13 chansons sur l’album qui sortira le 16 Mars prochain, 13 personnes sur la route, et un titre dans l’album s’appelle 13.
Le collectif s’est crée à la base au début de Tryo quand Guizmo rencontre Gerome , de fil en aiguille en 2011 apparaissent quelques dates où Guizmo, Alee, Zetoun et Le Pied De La Pompe partagent la scène… Puis  on compte 45 dates de concert en France lors de Festival en 2013, et le tout  sans album ! Tout le monde en redemande, alors les revoilà en 2015 avec une tournée et un album ! Ce nouvel opus sortira le 16 Mars prochain, d’ailleurs pour commencer les festivités sachez que Collectif 13 sera en CONCERT AU DIVAN DU MONDE LE 19 MARS. Puis suivra une belle et grande tournée dont vous retrouverez toutes les dates sur leur site ou sur Facebook.
