I think it would be fair to say that some people whose out put is quite regular suffer from quantity over quality. For Malik Kassim, the Amsterdam based producer also known as Retromigration, this just is not the case. With three records out already this year and plenty more on the horizon including a full LP on Wolf Recordings, it seems Kassim is determined to debunk the quantity over quality theory and prove you can very much be both. His records do the speaking for this argument, with his styles ranging similar to modern greats like Folamour and Kerri Chandler massively influencing off funky and up beat rhythms yet still maintaining that punchy four to the floor techy beat and its in these influences we move on the Phonica Mix 96; Retromigration takes us on a trip through many styles here across jazzy beats, funky rhythms, pumping house and melodic piano riffs, its very much a day in the Sun kinda party mix and he definitely helps us imagine that setting here.

Renowned for cleverly fusing different musical influences into timeless contemporary jams, Athlete Whippet are a duo spread across Berlin and London and have become an integral part of both cities’ scenes in recent years with releases and remixes for the likes of Toy Tonics, Rhythm Section and Kitsuné Musique. Taking a communal approach to music making, they co-run artist collective and record label Squareglass - a proudly established home for new artists coming out of South London. They've also been hosting intimate nights with DJs from far across the electronic music ecosystem in London and Berlin since 2019. Guest sets from the likes of Seb Wildblood, Hidden Spheres, Jitwam, Glenn Astro, Aus Music head Will Saul, Lobster Theremin founder Asquith and some of London's brightest new talents have made for some unmissable parties in London's cosiest venues. The duo's releases have also come with reworks from Ross  from Friends, Baltra and Max Graef. Supporters incl. Pete Tong, Annie Mac (BBC 1), Tom Ravenscroft, Jamz Supernova (BBC 6), Mixmag, DJ Mag. Following a lockdown season with shows on Balamii, Rinse FM, HÖR and Worldwide FM (with guests incl. Nicola Cruz, Lefto, Nightwave), the duo have ended 2021 with European tour dates alongside Session Victim, Dan Shake, Paula Tape, Esa Williams and COEO. Their latest EP 'Nogueira' has seen strong support across DSPs, landing them on the cover of Spotify's 'Fresh Finds Dance' playlist.

Black Loops w/ Marina Trench - November 2022

One of our favourite producers of 2022 steps up with an exclusive 64 minutes of almost entirely unreleased material. Parisian producer @tour-maubourg has released an remarkable body of work in the past couple of years that connects the dots between his city's deep house and nu jazz heritage (e.g. St-Germain, Wuz, Cassius) and the contemporary jazz scene, where sumptuous 4/4 grooves and broken beats are laced with sweet vintage and analog synth solos and motifs. We predict the biggest things for him and are very happy to have him contribute to our long-running series.

*How would you describe your sound?*

I’m trying to produce modern music, mainly house, jazz, and dub related with an old school and warm feel.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* 

If I had to name three main influences it would be Ron Trent and Chez Damier, for their vision and reflection on pushing forward the sound.

Basic channel for their exploration of texture and ambience. Their sound has a unique feel.

Nicolas Jaar for his abilities to touch the masses with non pop music. His ability to make complexity simpler so that anyone can understand his music.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

I was very happy that it was only made out of my production. As I have tons of music I stick that will probably not be released, it’s a good way to take it out of my hard drive and give it a second life 🙏

Fresh off the back of their very well received debut album, the Munich-based duo is back on Permanent Vacation to kick off 2023 with their „Eleganza“ EP. Once again, the guys do what they do best: timeless house music in distinctive Rhode & Brown style.  In the past ten years Rhode & Brown established themselves as one of the most reliable house producers around with rock solid releases on Permanent Vacation, Shall Not Fade, Toy Tonics, Public Possession or their own Slam City Jams imprint. As well as becoming a household name in the DJ world, sharing the booth with the likes of Palms Trax, Dam Swindle, Jamie Tiller or Octo Octa - spreading their infectious "Dancing Deejays" vibes around the globe. Rhode & Brown’s productions and DJ sets showcase their open minded approach to music and a passion for the nuances between genres - „We find inspiration in all corners of our record collection. Rosa Red's musical beginnings lie in the psychedelic and spherical niches of Rock as well as learning her craft by playing Bass in Post Punk Bands. Exploring what the music universe also had to offer, Rosa soon got immersed in the vast world of electronic music and found herself trading the bass guitar with turntables. Fascinated by the variety of styles and possibilities, this newfound world had to offer, the Berlin based artist took her musical journey to House, Breakbeat and Rave euphoria, while sitting comfortably between genres. Rosa's style is characterized by a personal take on the vital interaction of melody, rhythm & mood. You can hear her broad range in her widely praised DJ sets (which made her a regular at Munich's super club Blitz and a staple in Berlin's famous nightlife circle) and in her productions. The logical progression from playing music to making music led Rosa to her first two EPs landing, both of which landed on planet Permanent Vacation, who share a tight bond and a musical vision with Rosa Red. Benjamin Fröhlich has struck many chords in the arena of electronic music over the past years: as a DJ, label owner and producer.
