"I've respected, followed, and been inspired by the Cityfox crew for a few years now, so it was a real treat to put together Foxcast #3 for them. While I think a majority of my listeners know me for my pretty, lush, and sensitive approach to house music, I was excited to divert from that sound and assemble a collection of tunes that represent my interpretation of the Cityfox sound: dark, trippy, melancholic, at times driving, at times beautiful. Hi friends, here's my set from listed's PLAY party at BPM. My set was quite early in the day with the first few guests just arriving, so I got to start things really light (as I love to do) and slowly build a vibe for Naveen to take things over followed by Three, Konrad Black, and Bill Patrick. Thanks to Mike Perry for starting the day off with some light deep grooves, too. Overall, it was a really nice party with some really nice people. I hope to get to do it again next year (but maybe with less rain!).

The Debut Album by Detroit Swindle. It has everything you would expect from the Swindles, some slow burners with a hint of disco, some deep house, some banging club monsters and hey, even some leftfield hip hop jams.

The album opens with "B.Y.O.", a track that balances nicely between the DS shuffle and an old school New York style block party. The track is a taste of things to come for the rest of the album, hinting towards a big party vibe, but mellow enough to make it a really interesting listen.

The one thing Detroit Swindle are known for best is their knack for picking the right vocals. For Boxed Out, they came up with some perfect partnerships. They recorded "64 Ways" with none other than one of America's finest soul singers: Mayer Hawthorne. Being a fan of their sound he proposed to do a track together in return for a remix on one of his album originals to be released in 2014. "64 Ways" has a lazy shuffle, a bunch of catchy rhodes chords and few well placed layers of synths that give this track a hint of "Detroit Experiment", wrapped up in an almost poppy house jam.

One of the other vocal tracks is "Thoughts of She", that effortlessly samples the voice of UK soul singer Alice Russel from the track "Pushin' on" by "The Quantic Soul Orchestra". There's also the gorgeous track "Center of Gravity" that has Berlin based, Ghanese-Canadian soul singer Sandra Amarie on vocals. It's particularly this track that reflects the true spirit of Detroit Swindle's music, a mixture of soul and UK garage meets Detroit house slowed down to a sexy groove with some of their trademark pads and stabs.

They pushed themselves to explore different tempos as well, which not only resulted on some slow house burners, but also in 2 hip hop tracks. "For the Love of..." is a homage to the old school sounds of "J. Dilla", "A tribe called Quest" and "The Pharcyde", combining off-beat shuffles, a gritty bass line and a warm cut-up soul sample. "You, Me, Here, Now" is almost a love song, disguised in a s(w)ing-a-long down tempo type of track. It's one of those "one more tune" kinda tunes.

So there's hip hop, there's soulful vocals, but It just wouldn't be a Detroit Swindle album without a few bangers on it. "Huh, What!", "Shotgun", "The Fat Rat" and "He's Just This Guy, You Know?" are all relentless dance floor monsters, pushing the tempo to match old school Chicago and New York house cuts from the late 80's and early 90's.

With these tracks "Boxed Out" has a great combination of gritty percussions, hot vocals and catchy chords and it is exactly this recipe that has become the much-loved trademark of Detroit Swindle's house universe. The album has a little bit of everything in exactly the right dose, making it both a good listen, and an extremely infectious club album.

The mix weaves through sounds that are bombastic vs modest, dark vs light, groovy vs trippy, haunting vs heavenly, and so on...My approach to DJing is to keep sounds and feelings in a constant state of flux, never getting stuck in a single place. I believe a well-crafted mix is a metaphor for life: anicca, anicca...constantly changing, changing...

It’s very rare in today's digital age to find an artist that has built a profile for themselves without the backing of any productions. However, for the last 4 years Atish Mehta has been forging a career for himself through only DJing, and a small gig in San Francisco has turned into a musical journey that his seen him play live across the globe. Anyone that has seen Atish live can attest to his natural enthusiasm for music which is only matched by his ability to entertain a dancefloor. His mixes on soundcloud has seen him amass quite a following and the quality of his monthly podcasts has led to his play counters increase from 2000 to around 20 000 plays in no time.

Atish’s natural talent and passion for music haven’t gone unnoticed: Lee Burridge asked Atish to play on the legendary Robot Heart bus sound system at Burning Man in 2011, and Atish has been invited back every year since. He’s also been honored to open for and tag with some of the most respected names in dance music including John Digweed, Danny Howells, Guy Gerber, M.A.N.D.Y., and Tyrant. Currently, Atish is on Listed Bookings’ roster, and he is a resident at Listed’s monthly party, Play, at San Francisco’s world-renowned club, The Endup. He‘s also the resident at the long-running quirky monthly event, Tutu Tuesday..

We are very excited to have Atish mix the latest Balance Selections podcast, and with this mix (as Atish acknowledges) he has shown his appreciation for  various shades house: “With this Balance mix, I touched on some pretty sounds, some deep ones, lushness, a touch of techiness, and a proggy-influenced finish with a hint of epicness (but hopefully not cheesiness).” It took Atish 2 months to put this podcast together and you can definitely hear his attentive approach towards track selection, and how each track compliments the next. (“Sometimes I’ll spend up to 45 minutes just on a single transition…”). It’s this attention to the finer attributes of the mix that has made Atish a regular visitor to clubs around the world….

Balance Selections 005: Atish

These last few years, I've observed a change in my personality transitioning from an extreme extrovert towards an introvert. I now find myself deriving energy by being alone rather than surrounded by people. It's a strange thing though, since as a DJ, I feel most alive when I'm on stage as the center of attention surrounded by people, which happens more now than it did before.

How can this contradiction exist?
Is a shift in personality correcting itself against a change in my behavior?
Or would this change have happened anyway?

These are questions I've been thinking about when putting this mix together. I don't know the answers to them, but maybe they are in this collection of songs I've put together. Hope you enjoy.

When working on this mix the image of a girl in sunglasses and a big gaudy hat (like this: http://bit.ly/njcrSf)  drinking lemonade kept popping in my head almost every time I worked on it...Perhaps the really nice San Francisco weather we're having (and our bizarre fashion sense) influenced my track selection and visual associations. The first few tracks of this mix open with a very very delicate, breezy, and sunny feel...the flute sounds at 11:34 [Marvin Zeyss - Hannah] are one of my favorite parts. The mid section of the mix gets just slightly trippy with reverberated sounds still floating along with a little more drive. It rounds itself out with a housey-influenced sound - a sound I don't explore that much...overbearing housey high-hats can get on my nerves. However, the prominent organ sounds complemented by round beautiful bass  on the last few tracks (like Roberto Rodriguez - I Keep Thinking of You @ 38:00) fit nicely into my vision of sitting outside on a summer afternoon drinking a cold sugary lemonade.

Back in November 2014, Scotty.A hit the Proton Music headlines once again as "Tomorrow" shone a light into the UK producer's musical soul. A remix EP followed as Addex and Frank Maris took the reins and now "Tomorrow" returns for a third outing, reworked by a techno legend and a multi-talented San Francisco icon.

Oliver Lieb requires little introduction to both the Proton cognoscenti and the wider music-loving masses. A German of prodigious talent and multiple personas that have taken the trance and techno scenes by storm over a 25 year period, his work under the Force Legato, L.S.G. and Oliver Lieb production pseudonyms have never ceased to provide success, recognition and respect.

Remixes for Moby, Faithless and Human League have seen Lieb scale lofty heights few can equal, bringing kudos and credibility to all that he touches. With work signed to such celebrated imprints as Platipus, Yoshitoshi and Hooj Choons, Lieb's own Maschine and Solieb labels have also provided a hallmark of sustained quality.

A regular on Proton Music over the past eighteen months, 2014's "Dark Energy" EP provided techno mastery before a set of remixes included Silinder, Tim Penner and Scotty.A himself. 2015's "VY Canis Majoris" has continued Lieb's immaculate original production material with a number of remixes set to follow during the rest of the year. Now tackling his first remix for Proton, Oliver Lieb's rework of "Chapter's End" is full of the majesty and production mastery for which he is famous. Intricate layers of percussive groove and rhythm drive forwards with unrelenting intensity, backed by an intelligent reinvention of the Scotty.A's melodic components. Gated synth elements provide rhythmic synchronicity combined with Lieb's own production work to create a remix with an impressive story to tell.

San Francisco based Mark Slee is another DJ and producer with a host of skills and talents to his name. A regular number one ranked DJ on Proton Radio with his Heron Sound show; Slee is an iconic figure in his San Francisco hometown both as DJ in a variety of local clubs and bars, and as a promoter and event organiser. Furthermore, Mark Slee's technical prowess has seen his lighting software deployed at globally renowned festivals, "Burning Man" and "Coachella".

A production portfolio that has seen a raft of original productions for Jondi and Spesh's Looq imprint, Mark Slee's sound has made a significant impact on the deep house community with such offerings as the "Sunday Trails" and "Surface Tension" EPs. Now making his debut for Proton Music, Mark Slee's "Space Jazz Improvisation" provides a unique interpretation of "Next Chapter". A smooth rhythmic bed layered with deep house chords opens proceedings with hi-hats to the fore, before a meandering freeform melodic interpretation wends its way atop in glorious carefree abandon. Breaking from the norm in impressive style, Mark Slee's work deserves immediate attention.

Just a collection of some techy and deep tunes that I mixed together.The common thread running through this mix is that all but two tracks use vocals as an instrument.I am really attracted to the use of cut up, often indistinguishable vocal samples in dance music.I think it makes what some describe as the "robotic" feeling of techno/tech-house much more human, organic, and accessible.

[001] - june 2010 - some tracks i like

One of the things I heavily focused on this mix was harmonic mixing.If you compare this mix to my June 2010 mix, you'll notice that the tracks flow much better from a melodic perspective.
I started this mix off with some spacey nu-disco tracks originally hoping to pull it around to some synth-funk and disco to close it out...The mix ended up taking a tech-house turn, most likely because I really wanted to include Pezzner's Chiuso Per Ferie (19:27)...After that track, the mix kind of took its own direction with little hope for making it into disco. I'm still mostly pleased with the mix, although I feel that the Shonky, Agaric-Dudu number (32:32) took the mix a little darker than necessary, especially after a bouncer like iO-Jeton. Well, that's life - it's not like I have control over these things..sometimes the tracks choose you.

I recently spent about a month traveling abroad in Asia and Europe...In Europe, I was constantly on the run between DJ gigs, sightseeing, visiting friends, and getting swindled by the Turkish mafia...Between all these adventures, I managed to find pockets of down time and over 3 weeks, assemble this mix at various European airports, airplanes, Swiss trains, Dutch coffee shops, and apartments...This mix is as well-traveled as I am, and perhaps the various feelings the mix takes on represent the various influences I've had over my travels: we hear pretty organic sounds transforming into a more driving synthesized sound, followed by trippy bass boomers, then finally into a late-night bigger club sound...

Yesterday I got back from Burning Man, and the 7 mind-blasting days were incredibly valuable to me, for they inspired a lot of well-needed confidence in my DJ abilities. Every morning I rolled out of bed, brushed my teeth and spun for 2-4 hours, eating breakfast while behind the decks. Most nights I would spin at least another 2-4 hours as well. It was a great experience playing for my camp and having random pedestrians stop in my camp for a dance. I'm looking forward to next year where I can expose my sound (and tech-house in general) to even more burners...Inspired by the week, I put together this mix...Enjoy

Last weekend was Love Weekend in San Francisco. Although the actual Lovefest parade was canceled, and I didn't get to play the listed float (which I was REALLY excited about), I got to spin some tunes at my friend's Lovefest breakfast house party. The mimosas were flowing and the party vibe with my best friends was perfect. Before jumping into the typical deep and tech-house jams, I started the day off spinning a couple hours of chill nu-disco warmup, which I tried to recapture in this mix.
I suggest playing this mix on a lazy Sunday morning while you're eating brunch, going for a drive, or slowly recovering from your Saturday night bender.

Prophecies

I had a nice time at the BPM festival this year down in Playa del Carmen, Mexico....There was consistently great music, perfect weather, and I got to see my friends from all over the world. For March, we explore what I like to call the richer side of deep house. I offer deep sub-bass lows complemented by warm spacey highs, lush synth sweeps, sensual vocal hooks, and a prog-influenced resolution. Progressive house has been entering my consciousness these last few months in various manifestations. These last few years, I admittedly thought "prog" was a dirty word, but as of late I've been finding music that holds on to the melodic beauty of prog, injects deep house grooves, yet still maneuvers away from the cheese the genre has been branded...all of which I think you'll hear in the 2nd half of this mix.

Atish plays from the soul with a smile on his face. His charm flows as freely as his grooves, and his infectious personality is poured into every performance. The links he makes are not just musical but personal, too, as he communicates the highs and lows of life through his sounds. As an unmistakably warm person, he has quickly built up a dedicated fan base that feeds off his passion and energy. The Atish experience is about more than just dancing - it's about connection.

There is an intimacy and elegance to the music Atish plays whether it's deep house, Romanian minimal, artful techno, or emotive progressive house. Melody unites it all - whimsical keys and curious synth patterns that stir a wide range of emotions and get lodged deep in the memory. For Atish, the challenge is to lead an audience into unexpected new worlds: they won't know how they got there but will be delighted when they arrive. It's a subtle skill he has mastered
while never taking himself too seriously.

His own productions have come on cultured labels like Anjunadeep, Satya, and Stil Vor Talent. The Manjumasi Music label he co-founded with Mark Slee in 2016 deals in house with real heart and musicality. The aim is simply to work with artists whose music they admire; to give a leg up to those who deserve it, then watch them grow, whether with his label or elsewhere.

He is similarly open-minded and candid on social media and recently wrote some software to analyze a year's worth of playlists before discussing the results. He's also keen to demystify the often shadowy and secretive world of DJing and production and open it up to all, which is why he started his own unique party series, Late Night Tonite. Each event started with a sit-down interview with the guest and a conversation about the creative arts before the dancing began.
That now dormant concept led Atish to start his own mentorship program during the Covid lockdowns. He continues it to this day, with students enjoying one-on-one coaching, feedback, and advice sessions in which he shares what he has learned about all aspects of the industry.

In truth, this career chose him rather than the other way around: as a long-time and obsessive music collector, he was happy enough to play on the side around his software engineering day job. But he was making such a mark on the parties he played that word got out and the bookings kept on coming. He decided to throw himself into music rather than live to regret the missed opportunity and hasn't looked back since.

Atish has forged his own path and proven that DJs need not hide behind the music. Instead, Atish is right there to share the moments with you.
