Sydney via Melbourne-sider Cop Envy brings forth two heartbursting, patient and effective tools to mark the return of the Cry Baby imprint - long silent after their debut exploration with Dan White.

The anachoic, blistering tones of Balanced push the vinyl medium to it's absolute limits with Heavy, HEAVY bass and incredulously well produced embellishments making this a DJ tool for the year 3000. 

Leisure laces the flip with something a little closer to the present day no thanks to  barely melodic musical structures peeling away to reveal the rhythmic intricacies and soul rattling subsonics that roll effortlessly through to the bitter end. REWIND.

...here’s a little teaser/bonus mix - a trip through my hardcore/jungle record collection circa late ’93-’95. Nothing too obscure, just a bunch of tunes I loved then and now. 

Those of you who know me know that I like a challenge, so the sequence of tunes in this particular mix roughly mirrors the original samples featured in Eclectic Mix 6. Not going to bang on about it but this was a fairly massive ball-ache to structure across both mixes, and almost completely unnecessary as the tunes are pretty well-known, but just thought I’d try it for fun. Not sure if I can be bothered to repeat this ordeal for the final mix, but if you’re feeling it let me know and I may reconsider...

[Eclectic Samples Mix VI] - Jungle Edition

The final mix of samples used in jungle/D&B, 1994-1996, or thereabouts.

Over 200 tracks from a smorgasbord of eclectic sources including soul, funk/breaks, new romantic, electro, cheesy 80s pop acapellas, a hint of ragga, Chinese ambient classical folk, film samples, new age weirdness and, oh my, a veritable fuckload of hip-hop. Most of this flipped and reconfigured into an extended sample trip scattered with VIP reinterpretations of your favourite jungle hits :D

With hardcore and early jungle covered in mixes 5 & 6, this is a fitting way to end the series. 
It’s a really special era to me, the best of times. Back in 1995 we were hitting the dancefloors hard; Ruffneck Ting mixtapes and the Full Cycle radio shows were fuelling our vinyl addiction, and the variety of fresh music out there was incredible. A whole spectrum of breakbeat music from ragga and rare groove-infused jungle to atmospheric DnB, the Reinforced/Metalheadz sound and early techstep through to hip-hop flavoured jump-up and the 'pure rollers' era… and if you ask me, it never sounded better than when all mixed up together. My most cherished sets to this day are those Randall ones (who else?) where you’d hear a Photek dub in the mix with the latest Formation smasher - contrasting, complementary styles. I’ve tried to keep this diversity in mind here, albeit with the music retold in the form of samples and with the tempos running all over the place, but hopefully it still comes across. It fucking well better had cos I’ve easily spent a couple of hundred hours on this bad boy :0

Hessle Audio welcome @laksauk to the label with three tracks of rowdy and forward-thinking dance music, following his last release on Timedance in September.

On the A-side, ‘Fire Kit’ sees the London-based producer and DJ approaching his sound from a different direction, with dancehall infused percussion offset by enveloping layers of sub-bass warmth at 95bpm. The B side jacks up the tempo with a raucous energy as the temperature drops to below freezing. Basslines rumble in ‘Belly Brocka’ and ‘T’s Tent’ like an approaching storm and snares lash through the mix like ice picks, with the broken rhythmic energy driving the dance forward in 2021 and beyond.

Running the club night and monthly NTS show ‘re:lax’ with re:ni, Laksa has been consistently pushing bass mutations since his early EPs on Beneath’s Mistry label. A Bristol bass bobbler at heart, his hybrid sound has found a home on many respected labels such as Timedance, Ilian Tape and Whities, cementing his place amongst the latest UK talent.
