Welcome to the 9th episode of Groove Theory. My guest this time around is no other than the talented MightyKat, who has been a pioneer of the Montreal electronic music scene. She has prepared an extra groovy set with some funky and deep elements. I can guarantee that you’ll want to move while listening to this, wherever you will be. 

MightyKat was born with a sixth sense for rhythm. International DJ and veteran for over 25 years, she has no problem commanding a dance floor with well-curated selections that span eclectic house, rare disco cuts, the funkier side of techno, and beyond. Her versatility is further demonstrated by her equal abilities to warm up a room, close out a night, or control the primetime slot at clubs, festivals and afterhours alike.
Shortly after starting her vinyl collection, MightyKat founded the wildly successful ‘Dizzy’ night at Salon Daomé with Vincent Lemieux in the early 00’s, presenting to Montreal to now-legendary names like Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano, Zip, Sonja Moonear, and Sammy Dee. Through the years, MightyKat has also shared a bill with Doc Martin, Cesar Merveille, Cassy, Derrick Carter, Archie Hamilton, Ryan Crosson, Matthew and Anja Schneider, to name just a few. Now with her popular sunset party ‘Purr Club Social’ in Montréal for 6 years, and also holds a weekly livestream spanning 52 episodes during the lockdown. She also lent her talents to the Listed Takeover of Desert Hearts TV Twitch this past spring.
In addition to frequent appearances in Montreal, she has been heard laying down grooves at prestigious venues across the continental US and beyond in places like Berlin, Brooklyn, DC, Miami, Playa del Carmen, Paris, San Francisco, and many more.

GCR is proud to bring you the debut solo EP from Brian Best, the best Brian there is. You may recognize Brian from our second release as 1/3 of Script the Flip, or even from his Keep it Movin' residencies at some of NYC's best venues, but he is most often recalled for his moonlighting at area malls and strip clubs. Strongly influenced by an extended stay in Berlin that would forever change his path, Brian has pumped out some tunes in parallel to the experiences he describes as “tight and wavy.”

‘Friends’ and ‘The Resistance’ kick and claw their way through a vibrating mesh of lush pads and superbly programmed percussion. They are a burst of energy and a roll of emotion you can’t help but bounce your head to. Argentina native Manuel Sahagun masterfully plucks through his remix of ‘Friends’, matching the original’s gait and redefining its character. ‘Friends’ gets another remix from local artist, accomplice, and techno debonair Sean Cormac who flips the track on its head as it pulses and grinds its way to glory. With this release we can now happily say Brian Best is not only a friend, but surely ‘good company’. Enjoy GCR006.

ATOM is Matt Inconiglios. He’s been experimenting with sound ever since he re-wired his AM radio to play through an old guitar amplifier as a child. Excited by the possibilities of sound manipulation through electronics, ATOM now mixes music, sounds, dialogue, and whatever else he can find to create a surreal sonic painting, steeped in electronic beats.

Inspired by the works of The Orb, Akufen, Meat Beat Manifesto, Josh Wink, and Luke Vibert, ATOM creates mixes and original tracks using elements of the entire sound spectrum, ranging from classical music, to electronic beats, to found sounds of everyday life. Growing up DJing at all types of parties, events, and clubs, ATOM sharpened his skills of dance music mixing, constantly interjecting elements of surprise. Turntables, samplers, computers - ATOM now harnesses whatever gear he needs to take listeners on an impressive, and oddly hallucinogenic journey. Having rocked parties for over 25 years, ATOM’s live DJ sets are always an audio delight.

Whether its a chorus of crickets from a backyard, two notes of a blues harmonica player, or a funked-out 1980s electro beatbox loop, ATOM will take sound samples from any source and morph them together to get his point across. He’s also been known to perform under the aliases of ‘Precious Roy’, ‘Arthur Pfund’, and ‘Matt Inc’.
