Dutch ambient explorers CHI were a group of travelers living in a commune together in the mid-80s, constantly recording and performing quietly experimental works inspired by the likes of Jon Hassell, Can, and Byrne & Eno’s seminal My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts. Their collective improvisations were some of the first examples of ambient music to be regularly performed in a live setting, and The Original Recordings is a beautiful 2LP reissue of pieces originally released by Staalplaat on a limited cassette (later also issued on CD in the ‘90s).

The soft mood-études compiled within are like the melancholic flip-side to the new age synth jazz of Woo, who’ve also had a recent renaissance. CHI skews more into a post-industrial landscape, at times even echoing the eerie harmonics of Hosono or Ryuichi Sakamoto’s ambient works of the era. This is a quiet creeper, not an album that jumps out and grabs you, but rather slowly envelops you and blankets your mind with rich, sonorous evocation.

Rod Modell returns as Deepchord for his first solo release on Astral Industries since inaugurating the label with his sought-after ‘Lanterns’ EP. Consisting of two stunning long-form pieces split on one side each, 'Immersions’ captures the emotive, halcyon sound that Rod has long become synonymous with. Opening with glistening ambient textures, ‘Immersion I’ grows into an 18-minute piece of deep rolling dub techno. On the other side ‘Immersion II’ paints pristine soundscapes of soft, lapping waves, underpinned by submerged pulsations that rise to the surface to continue its deep space explorations. Two highly refined and inspiring tracks that sit on the apogee of this sound.

Based in London, U.K. Third Place Records aren’t your typical electronic music label. They specialize in what they like to call “curious dance music”, this ranges everywhere from breakbeat to jungle to leftfield house and beyond. For the second installment of their Third Place Dance Discs series they’ve called upon Stones Taro, a House & Breaks Producer and DJ from Kyoto, Japan. Stones Taro is deeply dedicated to furthering the house music scene in Kyoto, as he runs a house collective named “NC4K” (No Collar 4 Kicks) in his hometown with fellow DJ & Producer Lo-max.

“Full Train / Light On The Hill” is a two track EP that marks Stones Taro’s first vinyl release. The Kyoto native flexes his production chops over the two tracks, expertly layering rhythms, and dazzlingly lush ambient instrumentals. Stones Taro’s sampling of exotic birds on the first track, and the vocal sample he uniquely uses on the second track ensure that his EP perfectly fits the curious dance music aesthetic of Third Place Records. This is physically engaging and mentally stimulating electronic music unlike anything else you’ll hear.
