Matt Studdart  has been writing his brand of bedroom boredom blues since he first heard Eric Clapton’s Unplugged album at the age of 18.

It wasn’t until moving to London that Matt says his musical education really began. “Swapping blues records with an old boy at work, trading old for new was when I really started to pay attention. Tracing back the influences from new to old, British to Americana with each great artist giving you yet more new music to trace,  like a spiders web was just  fascinating to me.  It became an obsession of mine for a while.”  

Trying to interpret the new city around him and recreate and capture the romance of the old recordings he was listening too, Matt went about working on his first EP Smug Rope, which he self funded and recorded with the help of some childhood friends in 2013.

“It was more of a wide eyed boys spinal tap kind of affair than anything else” says Matt of his first trip into the studio. “ I knew nothing about making a record and  just went in and turned everything up to a 11 and recorded some weird blend of indie rock.” 

Matt’s second EP,  released in 2014, was a more focused approach to the recording process. Replacing electric for acoustic guitars and dialing back the volume, The CMYK EP is more of a tip of the hat to Matt’s love of acoustic folk, a genre closer to his country roots. 

Now playing live shows around London, both acoustically and with his band the Dorset Boys, Matt is preparing to go back into the studio to record his currently untitled 3rd EP.
