Kawaii is a Japanese word that simply means Cute. The music style of kawaii music, or kawaii pop, has evolved from the youth cultures surrounding anime, comics, manga, and classic video games that are central to Japanese pop culture. The music is laced with bright, overly sweet, and cheerful melodies set in Future Bass, Dubstep, Bass music and Retro Video Game / Chiptune style. (Stem files available.)

Fate And Fiction Recordings is a Bristol based label headed up by Thrilogy aka Lee Pattison and Joseph Cook. He previously recorded as Deepgroove, releasing on Rekids, Cocoon, Klang Elektronik, Junior Boys Own. The label is about organic, dusty sampling Deep House and Techno from Bristol artists and further afield, with the stunning hand-drawn artwork by local artist Anna Higgie. Previous releases from the label include Ishmael, Greymatter and Christophe. After a year of parties around the city of Bristol, playing host to WOLF Music, Medlar, Red Rack ‘em, Alfresco Disco, Maxxi Soundsystem, Laurence Guy, Fate And Fiction are back with a heavy hitting EP. Opening with G. Markus, otherwise known as Ben Gomori (Monologues, Stern Edits, G-Edits) heading up this four-tracker. ‘Bassed God’ combines warm pads, chopped, swirling vocals and heavy sub bass. It’s a belter. Label boss Thrilogy (OM, Futureboogie, Wolf Music, Omena) returns with ‘Remember This’, channelling hands in the air rave breakdowns with nods to UK garage in its bouncing bassline. Add in the soaring house vocals and you have a perfect peak time cut.  N-Gynn(Superlux, Seven Dials Records) & Thoma Bulwer (The Bricks, Parasole Culture, Alternate Facts, Whasdat Music) are newcomers to the label with the rolling ‘Climax’.  Heavy sub bass, synth stabs & breakbeat are the order of the day on this club-focussed gem.  Finally Fate And Fiction welcome back Ment after his stunning debut on the label last year, ‘Vague Insanity’ supported by Gilles Peterson. This time he hits with Rhodes led ‘I’m Fading’ with spikey synth arpeggios, vocal trickery and warm synths, showing another side to an undoubtedly talented producer.

The next release on the Apparel Music’s catalogue APDEXTRA is a digital debut by @nonduality with his ‘Melodies’. Matthew Goldsmith (his real name) confesses that his first musical memories belong to a distant time when he used to dance along to The Beatles in his California living room with his mom and sister. Later he developed an obsession with guitar moving on to electronic music production in 2009 and, after relocating to Berlin in 2015, he immediately fell into the black hole of house and techno. The four track EP by the American/Berlin based producer is an amalgamation of a year’s worth of music production; two of the tracks originating in his flat in Friedrichshain, with the other two coming about during a visit to his friends ‘Local Dialect’ in New York City. Nonduality draws massive inspiration from artists like Janeret, Mangabey, Loure, and Loz Goddard to name a few and we’re really happy to host his debut on AM, being his ‘Melodies’ a perfect display of his musical capabilities. With ‘Melodies’ the artists looks at House Music from four different perspectives; from the Disco touch of the title track to the more Deep attitude of ‘Puzzle’ and ’Something New’ and finishing with ‘Unconscious’ with its fat bass-line and dreamy chords.

Originally working under separate aliases of Jtwig and RLS, Josh Twigge-Molecey from Brighton and George Protheroe from Banbury have come together as the DJ/Producer duo Sonic Juncture. Spanning the spectrum of Disco, House, Breakbeat, Techno and Electro with their production and mixes, the duo have many releases in the works to help craft a name for themselves within the scene. So far they have released their debut EP 'Unified' on Manchester based record label Chequered Wax. Their second EP will be out in a few months on Fresh Take Records and they have much more music in the works to deliver this year. They have drifted from their usual sound slightly with this mix and have gone for more of a chilled/atmospheric/balearic theme, so sit back relax and enjoy the ride!

THE MOSKALUS MIX SERIES #120: Sonic Juncture

Mix 12 comes from a familiar face on the Leeds scene. @friedunderground has been around the block. He’s held residencies at Distrikt, Belgrave and KMAH radio, and of course played alongside us for our LMF party with Skatebard. 

Fried’s contribution to the mix series is a sneak preview into a project which has been brewing in lockdown. His mix takes us on a much needed voyage, spanning the spiritual spectrum of down tempo acid and electronica chug.
