LWE Podcast 189: Fishermen

Voices From The Lake are Donato Dozzy and Neel, a duo that has redefined techno in both the live arena and the album format. Their debut full-length album for Prologue was widely heralded as a masterpiece for the way it displayed an incredible ear for sound design while painting vivid, multi-layered landscapes of slowly unfolding rhythm and texture. When playing live in serene environments like Japan's Labyrinth Festival, the pair explore experimental underwater sounds, African drumming, and minimalism while keeping the dancefloor in motion. 
 
In July of 2012, Voices From The Lake came from Rome to Brooklyn to present a special night of music at The Bunker in the back room of Public Assembly.  This was one of the greatest nights of music in the history of The Bunker.  Their tremendous six-hour set consisted of two separate live sets, and back-to-back DJ sets.  None of the music from the either of the hour-long live sets had been released, so we immediately got on them about their plans for the tracks.  We agreed on our favorite segments, and they produced live studio tracks based on those excerpts.  A few Voices From The Lake tracks have come out since the album, but this is their first full release since 2012.

Part 2 of the 4 part Emotional Relish series, Scott Fraser's Light Sleeper EP existence on vinyl here is the reason for the labels birth.   

Upon hearing the EP, as digital only on Relish Recordings, it was the desire that this music should come on circular black wax that led to the idea of a series of Relish releases on to vinyl via a co-label.

Exuding Scott’s expansive sound, Paraphrase Mine is the perfect late night dark room special.    Driven as if by a mutant disco itself, it has been a staple of both Messr’s Weatherall and Johnson “A Love From Outer Space” sessions, particularly when backed with the more direct, keys driven remix by Relish main man, Headman.  

This is complimented by the dub drenched Centreville Lapse on the flip.    A personal favourite of the 4 EP series, this track is so low-slung it perfectly captures the late night atmosphere of the axis basement from which it was born.   Staying locked in a deep groove, before kicking in half way through, this is the sound of modern British machine funk.  

Finally, Mr T J Fairplay shows his love of drama with what starts as a deep, sweeping remix before riding hats and rolling drums push the finale to higher plains in his inimitable cinematic style.
