After an overwhelming start with the illustrious artist Cuttlefish & Asparagus, who did an immense job both on Black Sun’s homonym and Ish’s “Don’t Stop", KALAKUTA SOUL Records come back with another deep set of disco gems, touched by the hand of one of the most respected heads of the genre. Glasgow’s disco godfather, the almighty Al Kent, has delivered three eclectic masterpieces, due to take the international dancefloors to a further level of musical consciousness. A further pack of deep dug bombs that confront the functionality in music many labels have always strived for. The A Side keeps every imaginable sound system busy with a drifty percussive harvester adorned with an eclectic instrumentation that splits flesh from bones and mind from soul. “Colder Than Cold” on the B Side is a perfect example of how a dancefloor should sound like. A thick bassdrum, a bass slapped by the fingers of a giant, keys and chords from heaven and horns hailing from the utmost depth of Kalakuta’s soul. Bringing you back to where it all started, the almighty Al Kent does an immense work on an evergreen, you might have bumped into as a munchkin. “Gee Wiz” closes this opus with a orchestral beauty that once gathered all the souls behind what we call music today. Ladyhawk awakens in a trash-filled, "morning after" apartment in East Vancouver, British Columbia. Duffy Driediger (vocals, guitar), Darcy Hancock (lead guitar, vocals), Sean Hawryluk (bass, vocals) and Ryan Peters (drums, vocals) arise, pick up their instruments and head out into the heathen city, singing songs about life and love. They are rockers and dreamers -- still trapped in their apple country teenage minds, looking for girls and kicks, and mining their teenage quarries from the inside-out. Growing up together as the best of friends, Ladyhawk have stories that radiate with the presence of all four members. Their self-titled debut on Jagjaguwar is a stomping and sweaty ride through the Vancouver streets that they all know well, as viewed from the seats of a bruised and doorless Astro Van. In this ride, you can't help but feel that you will fall out and you will fall down, and your joints will all be sore at the end of the trip.
Ladyhawk's core is bracing rock. Neil Young's Tonight's The Night is the hailstorm on the hood of The Replacements Let It Be, while distorted guitars invoke the thread and swerve of Silkworm and Dinosaur Jr. Helped along the way by Amber Webber (vocals) and Josh Wells (percussion, organ, singing) of Black Mountain, it will be hard to find a more hauntingly beautiful set of rock music than this debut. It was recorded and mixed, with the help of Black Mountaineers Wells and Matthew Camirand, in the "Karachi Vice" clubhouse, in the back of a furniture factory, amongst chicken and fish processing plants. With some of the more "inexpensive" ladies of the night scattered about, it captures the bottlenecked frenzy of their much-loved live show. There, each night, these grown-up kids at heart fall over, get right back up, cry on shoulders and fold the day in halves, watching the sun come up over the dashboard.

(They Long To Be) Close To U (a Discobody classy smoothness)

"(They Long to Be) Close to You" is written by the fabled songwriting duo Burt Bacharach & Hal David. It was first released in 1963  by Richard Chamberlain and was also recorded that same tear as a demo by Dionne Warwick and re-recorded with a Burt Bacharach arrangement for her 1964 album "Make Way For Dionne Warwick". Bacharach released his own version in 1968. But it was Karen & Richard Carpenter in 1970 that made it a #1 hit for four weeks in the U.S. Pop charts, from their second album "Close To You". The funny thing is that it was first given to Herb Alpert as a follow up to his #1 hit, "This Guy's In Love With You" but he wasn’t exactly excited with his interpretation so he passed it to Carpenters, the new act he had then signed to his label A&M Records.
Other cover versions were performed by Dusty Springfield, Frank Sinatra, Perry Como,  Jerry Butler, Bobby Womack, Isaac Hayes, Johnny Mathis, Connie Stevens with Kermit the Frog & Fozzie Bear on The Muppet Show, Tina Arena, Paul Weller,  Harry Connick Jr., Rick Astley, The Cranberries, The Smashing Pumpkins, and also a new one by Lauryn Hill & Ronald Isley is to be released soon. This is Homer and Marge's love song on The Simpsons, played numerous times in the series, as well as in the movie.

In 1986 Gwen Guthrie scored a UK #25 hit with her adaptation, raised from the album "Good To Go Lover", which was produced by herself. The mighty Larry Levan remixed the 12inch single, so it can not be but a masterpiece! 
Guthrie’s flawless take is the best of them all in my book as she brings new vibe to the song changing a bit the lyrics in a humorous way and provides a sophisticated funky groove. I still admire the effortless way she sang as easy as one speaks. One wonders what amazing tracks she could have recorded if only she hadn’t passed away on February 3, 1999. 

On this mix I completely reconstruct the track paying my respect to the diva and the legendary Levan. Alter intro and outro, many breaks, some new beats,sounds & stuff and lots of work on the vocals is what I deliver here. Enjoy :)
