Piano Exercise ii

Finally remastered after 9 years, this is a recording of our very first installation in a freezing gallery in Hoxton in 2005. Original recording by Seb Hunter.
(The image is a spectrogram analysis / visualsation of a part of the track where a lorry drives past the window of the gallery.)

Walk

A composition using only sinewaves pitched at the same frequencies of the harmonic over tone series of a 'singing' bowl. 

This track formed the basis of our 'Chambers' piece performed with John Butcher. The actual installation lasted for 3 days.

Not music, but emergent sonic ecologies; a synthetic soundscape from an evolutionary system driving x2 4op FM synths modelled in maxmsp. None of this was written, but 'evolved' ... Part of a research project based atThe Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, London, UK.

Manufacturing Error

An attempt at developing a patch in maxmsp that uses machine learning organisational typologies, Self Organising Maps for note selection & Markov chain periodicity for rhythm alongside evolutionary computation (Genetic Algorithms)for generative development. The music here has not been actively written, but 'curated' so that an aesthetic themes can develop independently over time.

A common critique of machine learning processes is that they fall into common typologies of pattern recognition and repetition; identifying and classifying information, but not creatively manipulating the data into something novel.
 
This ‘system’ addresses this position, and blends analytical ML processes with evolutionary computation and human curation to ‘evolve’ music from a base position into something new and unique. 
 
The system is part of a series of experiments used to ‘evolve’ sounds and music to fit a convolved model of a space; audio analysis determines which musical characteristics of a given model go on to seed the next generation. 
 
This method will show us how musical processes can evolve to suit a given spatial condition, just as they have for thousands of years …

In 2016 we were invited to undertake an installation in Silo 468, a disused gas cylinder in Helsinki. Audialsense, from 2005 to 2017 were are a London based sound & architecture research group, looking at the relationship between the physics of sound, the phenomena of listening, and the synthesis of the two into spatial representation and architecture. 

From 2017 onwards the work has mainly been the output of Paul Bavisters PhD research.
