Wind Harp, Walltown Crags

This is the fifth episode of the Disquietude podcast of ambient electronic music.

The goal of the Disquietude podcast is to collect adventurous work in the field of ambient electronic music. What follows is all music that captured my imagination, and I hope that it appeals to your imagination as well.

All five tracks of music are featured with the permission of the individual artists or record labels. Below is the structure of the episode with time codes for the tracks, the spoken annotation of the tracks, an interviews with one of the musicians (Lesley Flanigan), and a brief essay about reading waveforms.

Disquietude Ambient Podcast 0005

Earlier this week I visited the grave of writer W.G Sebald who is buried not too far from my home (about 20 miles). I’ve visited this place and made field recordings for about 6 years since I moved to this part of England. This was my first trip since December 2019.

That day (Tuesday 20th April) I made 2 field recordings which were about 15 minute each in length at this graveside location and tonight I loaded them up and let them play in full.
I improvised along in 1 take with the field recording playing. I used with 3 seperate low volume ambient sounds, letting them each loop after a few minutes. I only listened back one time, making slight adjustments to the volume levels but didn’t change or make any edits.

This seemed to fit the mood of Earth Day for me.

Stony Moonlit Mountain (NaviarHaiku 395)

A track for Naviar Records' weekly haiku challenge. As this haiku mentions specific Japanese imagery (the kimonos and Tokyo's Sumida River) I thought I'd base my piece largely around the Hirajoshi pentatonic scale, although I have taken a couple of liberties and added an extra note in the first section.

(My First attempt at a Naviar Haiku Challange for a whille due to being locked for a while out of my old Soundcloud profile. I've started a new profile as my old one was full and I no longer pay the fee. )

It was a pleasure to create this, after reading the haiku and thinking of it, I went for a classical sort of instrumentation but from a fairly out there place, I wanted to have the string sounds to become a drone and repeat and delay to symbolise the 'piled up snow'. 
I enjoyed this attempt and is nice to be creating something quick and fresh again. The piano represents the sound of water.

Regarded as the father of contemporary haiku, Masaoka Shiki was a poet and literary critic during the Meiji period Japan.

He advocated realistic observation by “sketching” (shasei) poems and going out into nature with notebooks, thus abandoning the traditional subjects of haiku of the time. His advice for an aspiring poet was, “Use both imaginary pictures and real ones, but prefer the real ones.”

Audio Obscura - Flickering Hope

It's the half term school holidays in the UK this week, I'm sitting at home with two young kids and I read this email from Naviar for the Haiku challenge as it pops into my inbox.  I love the image this haiku creates. Outside my window at home we have tree branches that are winter bare. I was filming these the other day for another project. 
I had an idea for the music straight away - a 'bare' sort of sound to reflect the image of branches.  I started on this straight away. The kids are happy playing so I progressed and made this in about 2 hours. 

Birds in a bare tree
Dance on windswept branches
Their waiting ballet…

John Hinks, aka FlownBlue, is a prolific and talented composer, and a regular participant in the Haiku challenge. Aside from his solo project, John is also involved in three improvising duos: ‘Windfall Light‘ (with Jim Tetlow), ‘Abstract Blue‘ (with Kevin Buckland) and ‘Light Fragments‘ (with Steve Escott).

European Towns

"Light is to the camera obscura as sound is to audio obscura." 
 
Odd electronics for the ears, making music covering the wide spectrums of electro-acoustic music, musique concrète, idm and occasional field recordings, with post-classical minimal leanings but beats and bass as well!.  Someone described it as "experimental easy-lsitening" which I like. 
For a while I collaborated as part of a collective under the name Sound Celestial Orchestra but that is no more!  (see, https://soundcloud.com/sound-celestial-orchestra)
I'm always keen on remixing other Soundcloud users and like a challenge.
