Strange things can occur in extremely isolated conditions. The alchemical results of insulation upon the body can push the artistic boundaries into a transformation of the psyche. In this instance, through sound Hypercube embrace the lockdown, becoming in closer proximity through distance. We seem to be transported into quantum fragmentation as other possible worlds.

sound-space is the sister label to Specimen Records this playlist involves a showcase of a collection of artists  producing audio and  visual for the labels various projects. It is concerned with the aesthetics of electronic and experimental music genres, such as noise, glitch, modular and media composition.  It was initiated in October 1999 along with Efe Ce Efe in Berlin, showcasing “Coltan” her  new media debut album released in 2020. Since, it has continued with releases from Hypercube, InhumanZ, Dark Stereo and the legendry Kumo,. By the summer Aniruddha Das came aboard as co-curator and producer, pushing the emphasis on political issues and the boundaries of noise bringing a unique quality of sound and composition through DSPSSSSD and more dub oriented Dhangsha. Recently released was Simon Grab’s “Anthropocene Panic” another edging exposition in structured noise and glitch.

We have our first release this year March 05 with DSPSSSSD “Livid” his second release under this project which delivers powerful energy not just through the sound, but the concepts are poetical divisions of cultural divide and historical discrimination. As the title suggests we are “fed up” with this dystopian enslavement of being destitute and dispossessed. we must stand up to make a change!

This is the second track I recorded on a bed, in my hotel room, while on a trip to Leicester to perform at the first Dirty-Carter event. It's just me improvising using some of the gear and some sounds I would later use for the Dirty-Carter performance with some low level looping courtesy of my iPhone.

Equipment used:
a regular Kaossilator, a circuit-bent Kaossilator, two mini Kaoss pads, a Tom Bugs WOM micro synth, a Chimera BC8 micro synth, two Zoom PFX-9003 effects, a Boss DSD-2 sampler/delay, a Dirty-Carter E.S.G.I, an iPhone for loop playback, portable Edirol mixer and a Zoom H2 recorder. No laptops or desktop computers were used in the recording.

Luke Younger returns to PAN with an eight-track album of his most direct work to date. Composed alone at NO studio in the Essex countryside, to start an album with a piece called ‘Capital Crisis (New City Loop)’ seems an intentional misnomer. Long, sustained periods in the rural studio setting see Younger working with an array of fragmented, disassociated sound sources to build upon 2015’s Olympic Mess. It shares a similarly inclined vision of the urban environment, but here Chemical Flowers makes reference to paradoxical notions of authenticity and creative practice by way of questioning the structures around us. Collages are assembled and dismantled, temporal and spatial boundaries fluctuate and movement is an overarching theme.

Surrealist drowned world atmospheres sculpted far enough away from the source of inspiration leave plenty of room for ambiguity. The nocturnal nature of the recording process is self-evident, and pieces like ‘Leave Them All Behind’ tap into a deep psychedelic undercurrent. Confused narratives, emotions and aleatory hallucinations ebb and flow throughout. ‘I Knew You Would Respond’ evokes murky soundtrack terrain with eerie repetitive strings and ambient respite, disrupted periodically by brief bursts of granular noise. It’s one of the records most unnerving moments, possibly as it’s one of the most recognisably human.

The album navigates dense passages with recurring signifiers. Hollow percussion, modulating delay and curious field recordings come and go, maintaining a perpetual state of flux where nothing stays the same for long. The drowned world theatricals return on the swamp-like ‘Lizard in Fear’ whilst string rhythms creep in on the penultimate track to incite momentary electroacoustic harmony. Floating synthesis slowly washes over and the title track unfolds - five minutes of reverb-laced portamento, visions of decay and Editions EG influenced
world-building. Movement is key.

Chemical Flowers features string parts arranged and recorded by JG Thirlwell (Foetus / Manorexia / Xordox). Additional cello played by Lucinda Chua and saxophone by Karl D’Silva. The album is mastered by Rashad Becker, featuring artwork by Johannes Schnatmann & Bill Kouligas.

Bully boy bailiffs beat their baseball bats in a corporate ‘4 on the floor.’ Bastard slave-dog cops sniff the backsides of their masters. Deference is a long established disease. Revellers bicker as to which of their leaders is best qualified to torture them. Language has failed - reduced to “diss” and “cuss.” Snowflake supremacists cower in a corner clutching at their victimhood. Sink the Mayflower. Time for a scum clearance. From beyond the marketplace, an Alien militia emerges to guide those with bloodied feet, yet still with resolve, to a clearing where they can once again imagine, create and experiment.

Electronic musician Aniruddha Das will be in conversation with lecturer and writer Dr Dhanveer Singh Brar at the live online event "The Joyous Thing 2," presented by Outlands Experimental Music Network on Saturday 27th February. Brar lectures in Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London. His latest book "Teklife, Ghettoville, Eski: The Sonic Ecologies of Black Music in the Early 21st Century" wil be released April 2021. The two will focus on the engagement of black people / people of colour in experimental electronica in the UK.
