sound-space is the sister label to Specimen Records this playlist involves a showcase of a collection of artists  producing audio and  visual for the labels various projects. It is concerned with the aesthetics of electronic and experimental music genres, such as noise, glitch, modular and media composition.  It was initiated in October 1999 along with Efe Ce Efe in Berlin, showcasing “Coltan” her  new media debut album released in 2020. Since, it has continued with releases from Hypercube, InhumanZ, Dark Stereo and the legendry Kumo,. By the summer Aniruddha Das came aboard as co-curator and producer, pushing the emphasis on political issues and the boundaries of noise bringing a unique quality of sound and composition through DSPSSSSD and more dub oriented Dhangsha. Recently released was Simon Grab’s “Anthropocene Panic” another edging exposition in structured noise and glitch.

We have our first release this year March 05 with DSPSSSSD “Livid” his second release under this project which delivers powerful energy not just through the sound, but the concepts are poetical divisions of cultural divide and historical discrimination. As the title suggests we are “fed up” with this dystopian enslavement of being destitute and dispossessed. we must stand up to make a change!

This month's transmission of Virology features Asian Dub Foundation founder and bassist Dr. Das aka Dhangsha.

Under this new moniker he makes rhythmic noise with a grounding in dub, and frequently collaborates with London's Sound-space label.

We are kick starting our mix series again!

Following a bit of a break brought about by our now regular show on Netil Radio, we are honoured and very excited to have a recording from Dhangsha, aka Dr Das of Asian Dub Foundation. We have decided to aim our mix series at more particular sounds, with less of a focus on DJs and more on exploring the sounds and influences of producers and bands. Dhangsha has put together an awesome mix, or rather a soundtrack, entitled ‘Refugee Backpacker / Dream Holiday’. HUGE thanks to Dhangsha for this bone rattling journey.

“Refugee Backpacker / Dream Holiday” is an imaginary score assembled by Dhangsha and inspired by Philip K Dick’s “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale,” made famous by the film “Total Recall” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The new interpretation of the story would be made from an anti-colonial perspective with a view to compelling the audience to challenge their prejudices regarding various global relations when confronted with the economic realities underpinning them.

Text from Dhangsha: "Aniruddha Das, better known as “Dr Das,” bassist and co- founder of Asian Dub Foundation has always been interested in all forms of ‘experimental’ sound. Over the last 30 years he has explored ‘noise’ within the context of ‘dub.’ With his current projects he is, to different degrees, dismantling and disintegrating the rhythmic framework to expose the beauty of noise in its own right. As such, he is attempting to demonstrate the proximity of ‘noise’ to the dance floor.

For this session, not only has he drawn upon his work with Dhangsha (Bengali for ‘destruction’) and DSPSSSSD (‘dispossessed’), but he’s presented tracks from various artists who’ve inspired him and who share some of the same sonic rationale, if not sometimes political - namely, people like Bantu, Simon Grab, Sankara Future Dub Resurgence, Hallucinator and Evicshen."

The dance floor is now a barbed wire enclosure, strewn with broken glass. Bully boy bailiffs beat their baseball bats in a corporate ‘4 on the floor.’ Bastard slave-dog cops sniff the backsides of their masters. Deference is a long established disease. Revellers bicker as to which of their leaders is best qualified to torture them. Language has failed - reduced to “diss” and “cuss.” Snowflake supremacists cower in a corner clutching at their victimhood. Sink the Mayflower. Time for a scum clearance. From beyond the marketplace, an Alien militia emerges to guide those with bloodied feet, yet still with resolve, to a clearing where they can once again imagine, create and experiment.  

The sound of DSPSSSSD is like finding an old Fisher-Price toy in a plastic tesco bag, abandoned in a rotting shed at the bottom of the garden - corroded copper contacts - ‘90s batteries still leaking sticky acid - then plugging it in to a dub sound system and subjecting it to sonic abuse. It is a deliberate attempt to manifest Black Noise as a physical entity.

Electronic musician Aniruddha Das will be in conversation with lecturer and writer Dr Dhanveer Singh Brar at the live online event "The Joyous Thing 2," presented by Outlands Experimental Music Network on Saturday 27th February. Brar lectures in Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London. His latest book "Teklife, Ghettoville, Eski: The Sonic Ecologies of Black Music in the Early 21st Century" wil be released April 2021. The two will focus on the engagement of black people / people of colour in experimental electronica in the UK. Das's latest album "Livid" with his project DSPSSSSD will be released 5th March on sound-space.

sound~space emanates from a world seemingly on the edge of collapse, where empathy is all but extinct, language has failed, interaction reduced to ‘diss’ and ‘cuss.’ Using discarded frequencies, a sonic resistance creates militant meditations designed for spirit renewal, punctuated with pulses to facilitate bodily propulsion. Tonal analysis reveals tools required for struggle, both internal and external.
