DifferentSound invites Mareena (Berlin)

The DifferentSound Podcast #278 welcomes Mareena! Trends come and go, but some music is simply timeless. This is where Mareena’s focus as an artist lies. As a resident at Tresor and label owner at Unrush, she continues to leave her unmistakable mark as an artist. As a DJ she is chameleon, carefully stitching together immaculate and immersive sounds that will quickly turn any discerning dance floor into a sweaty rave. Lush ambient sets create a balance within Mareena's musical sphere, and one can immediately sense that she feels at home no matter the setting.  However, her career encompasses much more than just DJing. In the last few years, she has also emerged as an adept producer, with releases on Muzan Editions, Tresor, as well her own label, Unrush. These releases display the refinement of her production skills, where her dedication to modular synthesis has transpired into a palpable passion for discovering new sonic pathways. Unrush has grown too. With over 60 mixes and 4 compilations released to date, the series has expanded to include a broad family of artists and shows no signs of slowing down. All of these achievements have established Mareena as a powerful artistic and curatorial voice within the underground electronic music scene.

It’s always a huge pleasure for me to play the closing slots as it’s hard to predict how the floor and energy will be like… so I „have to work more“. In contrast to my last set at #hammahalle i went way more hypnotic / deep and i had a blast  .. again :-)

The fourth edition of SHDW’s flagship ‘Federation Of Rytm’ VA series has been carefully curated by the DJ/ producer and head honcho over more than a year, with close attention to detail given to sequencing. It is a balance of label regulars and debutants that represents the past, present, and future, both sonically and through the generational diversity of the artists involved. There are plenty of surprises along the way while always remaining true to the Mutual Rytm ethos and reflecting the journey of the night from start to finish, whether that's in intimate, sweaty clubs or on big festival stages.

Across 30 tracks in the digital collection and 24 on four sides of wax, the release explores the full breadth of the Mutual Rytm sound. Driving grooves and relentless percussion set the pace, gradually unfolding into hypnotic and atmospheric passages that invite deeper immersion. Pulsating low-end power alternates with eerie minimalism, while bursts of futuristic energy and cavernous kick drums keep the tension high. Elsewhere, dub textures and moments of introspection provide balance, creating a narrative arc that moves fluidly between intensity and release, atmosphere and tension, darkness and light.

@thelongcountcycle’s online bio simply reads: “Music as meditation. Dance as ritual.” The Brooklyn-based duo, who have performed at events and parties including the Rural Festival in Japan, and the Sustain:Release and Bunker Parties in New York City, let their music speak for itself.

Meanwhile, their own party "The Long Count Presents..." has featured such artists as @kerrilebon, Abdulla Rashim (@abdulla), @huerco_s, @call-super and Rrose. 

Delicately weaving together threads from ambient noise to melodic techno, Long Count Cycle’s music is vivid, austere, challenging at times, yet always irresistible.

Patterns of Perception 32 - The Long Count Cycle

Former ghost producer across various electronic genres and projects. The darker side of Coco del Sol.

Since being introduced to electronic music back in the early 90's, David has been hooked. At the age of 15 he started DJing and playing out at local underground events and raves around the Southern California area. You would've found him spinning various styles from house, acid, & techno to hardcore techno.

After years of DJing he then decided to learn to produce his own music, which landed him his first releases on labels such as Monoid, Stimulus, 4 Track & local label Droid Recordings. Since being associated with local event production group Droid Behavior in 2003, you can find him as a resident at the infamous Interface warehouse events as well as a regular producer for Droid Recordings. Over the years his music has gained worldwide attention and onto the playlists of many big players which eventually led him to gigs at some of the worlds biggest clubs including Berghain in Berlin and Fabric in London. He is also now regularly touring all over the world in Australia, Japan, Mexico, Canada, Central & South America, all throughout Europe and the U.S.A.

In early 2011 he started a project called 'Truncate' which focuses on the deeper, and more raw side of techno. His Truncate releases have been gain support from big players such as, Ben Klock, Marcel Dettmann, Chris Liebing, Speedy J, DVS1, Luke Slater, Ben Sims and many more.

With his heavy remix, production and touring schedule there is no slowing down in the near future for David as he continues to shape his own sound, putting Droid Behavior and Los Angeles on the techno map
