Justin Varis (b.Cincinnati, OH 1979) is an American musician/composer living in Los Angeles. Drawing on the rich history of musique concrète while most recently exploring minimal single instrument composition, his music is one of contrast and contradiction. Abstract tendencies conjoin with basic intimate melodies. Disruptive sequencing is utilized alongside loops and repeating patterns. Meticulous audio editing creates calculated timing while improvised passages lend expressive mistakes.

Form was recorded in the Winter of 2010/2011 and marks that very specific time in my life. I started recording Form after my project, feie, went on hiatus and for all I know may never exist again. This work reflects my understanding and appreciation for all things coming to an end. The album starts off kicking and screaming and slowly unwinds from then on. Sounds burst out like living organisms, somewhat imperfect and random and then fall apart by refolding into themselves. It carries a bittersweet sentiment, a dying organism so to speak. It is a desperate attempt to latch onto form, but losing it all to the elements. The sound is unstable and fragile. The low ends hold power over everything. It is a battle between what an individual pursues and the overwhelming power of nature.

Tools manipulated in an old workshop, clocks slowed down, the spinning wheel of a rusty bike, children playing near a church, the sound of the wind in Norfolk, climbing up the stairs in a disused windmill, ghost echoes. Those are some sounds that constitute the atmosphere of The Silent Watcher. Presented in their raw form or heavily processed, they all relate to old memories, often blurred and incomplete; the aural equivalent of a faded polaroid. From field recordings, layers are created, manipulated, taken apart and rebuilt and soon begin to tell a story - a story often buried under droney textures and fragmented melodies and only partially revealed, but more often distorted and reconstructed.

THE ARTIST
Coming from San Francisco, Aria Rostami’s music shares the same ebb and flow of his hilly and foggy city. Although very conceptually driven, Rostami's work tends to vary in mood and genre from song to song... a true lover of music rather than genre. His current work focuses on taking risks and facing change. Rostami has created ambient pieces for installations and produced scores for films.

UNIFORM
Uniform is a "remix album" and a follow up to my debut album Form. Form was about the deconstruction of sound while Uniform is about the reconstruction of it. Although the album contains only three proper remixes, the five new original tracks were guided by the spirit of a remix album. The songs were put together mostly by constructing field recordings, randomly recorded piano parts, and so on to create source material and then combined afterword to create songs. The new tracks were created to have some parallelism with the remixes. Uniform discovers the differences within similarities. Uniformity is nothing more than an idea; a force that turns and breaks from human lens to human lens.

…just some suburban afternoon sounds of someone blowing leaves in the street.  I noticed the blower made a musically, eerie sound.  It lasted for about 15 minutes.

THE ARTIST
Luis' interests in sound have carried him from a small border town near Mexico to graduate school in London, then to an unexpected life in Seoul and other cities in Asia. He has exhibited sound installations in various parts of the world and worked on sound scores for films which have premiered in several different countries. A commitment to opening ears to sounds of all natures is what drives him.

Lume II is taken from his extraordinary album Between Walks. Luis described the album as "a pause between transitory states in which I had the fortune to inspect, in detail, the sounds, sights and environments that I encountered while on walks."
