Memory   Drawings   is   the   beguiling   project   of   Minneapolis   raised,   Morocco-based   hammered dulcimer   player   Joel   Hanson,   erstwhile   Hood   guitarist/multi-instrumentalist   and   sometime Declining   Winter   main-man   Richard   Adams,   Brave   Timbers   violinist   Sarah   Kemp,   Chris   Cole   of Movietone/Manyfingers   (drums   and   cello)   and   Gareth   S   Brown   of   Hood   (piano).

They   produce   music   that   maps   the   contours   between   brooding   melancholy   and   redemptive calm   that      simultaneously   suggests   both   classical   minimalism   and   hearth-side   folk.   They   blend their   unique   instrumentation   into   dazzling   pieces   that   have   been   compared   to   Angelo Badalamenti’s   compositions   for   ‘The   Straight   Story’   soundtrack,   Laraaji’s   early   ‘80s   use   of   the hammered   dulcimer,   the   peaceful   qualities   of   neo-classicalists   such   as   Rachel’s   and   4AD   duo Dead   Can   Dance   and   This   Mortal   Coil.

They   have   released   three   albums   ‘Music   For   Another   Loss’   (2011),   ‘There   Is   No   Perfect   Place’ (2014)   and   ‘The   Nearest   Exit’   (2017).

Monty Adkins is a composer whose music is characterised by slow shifting organic instrumental and concrete soundscapes. His first album ‘five panels’ released in April 2009 on signature/radio France featuring Adkins playing e-guitar and organ and Pierre Alexander Tremblay on bass. The album has also been nominated in the ‘album of the year’ category at the 2010 Qwartz awards, Paris. His recent work has focussed on collaboration. fragile.flicker.fragment also nominated for the 2012 Quartz award in the best album category and Four Shibusa – which resulted in a major exhibition at the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese foundation in London.

Monty Adkins - Tender Light Rising

I am an electronic music composer who lives and works in London (UK). I started experimenting with sequencers and synthesisers in the late nineties influenced by Detroit techno, recording my output on tapes and mini-discs. Nowadays I create organic ambient and drone music, as a way to reflect on beauty, erosion and decay. My work combines acoustic sources with electronic tones generated by analogue and FM synthesisers. My compositions often involve dense atmospheres and hidden, distant or floating melodies, where field recordings act as a subtle counter-point.

Ted Laderas is a scientist, a cellist, and electroacoustic composer. He combines cello performance techniques with sound processing techniques to expand the outer realms of the cello. Marc Wiedenbaum of Disquiet wrote of his work: “As mediated by Laderas’ bank of technology, the lone cello takes on a kind of serene majesty – sustained, rich, formidable.”

The tracks in Astoria came from a year-long project to produce an improvisation a week. They document not only my growth as a cellist, but my exploration of the electroacoustic possibilities of the cello. The year was filled with small triumphs, funerals, depression, and joy, punctuated with trips to Astoria, Oregon to recharge and recuperate.

The cello plays multiple roles in these tracks, from percussion to bass to contralto, layered together to form impossible ensembles through my use of looping, pitchshifting, and reverberation. Astoria is a confluence of lullabies, hymns, and chamber symphonies into a coherent and satisfying whole.

Fundamentally delicate and yet insistently, breathtakingly complete, Hatami’s keen ear for microscopic levels of sonic detail allows the album as a whole to sketch a wide-screen vision of nature at work. 

Thematically profound and tonally complex, the music charts a course through a fragile natural world, constructing an exquisitely intricate tone poem from the manifold sounds of the earth and its transitory inhabitants.

Form was recorded in the Winter of 2010/2011 and marks that very specific time in my life. I started recording Form after my project, feie, went on hiatus and for all I know may never exist again. This work reflects my understanding and appreciation for all things coming to an end. The album starts off kicking and screaming and slowly unwinds from then on. Sounds burst out like living organisms, somewhat imperfect and random and then fall apart by refolding into themselves. It carries a bittersweet sentiment, a dying organism so to speak. It is a desperate attempt to latch onto form, but losing it all to the elements. The sound is unstable and fragile. The low ends hold power over everything. It is a battle between what an individual pursues and the overwhelming power of nature.

Aidan Baker (born 1974/1975)is a musician from Toronto, Canada who has released numerous records both as a solo artist and as part of various side projects, including Nadja, ARC, and Mnemosyne. He has also written several books of poetry.

He has toured in both North America and Europe, and has made appearances at the OM Festival, MUTEK, South by Southwest, and the Distillery Jazz Festival. He is married to Nadja bandmate, Leah Buckareff.

Baker utilizes a very experimental style of playing guitar, influenced by artists such as Caspar Brötzmann, James Plotkin, Kevin Shields, and Justin Broadrick. Influences on his musical structures and sound include Sonic Youth, Swans, Sunn O))), Red House Painters, Godflesh, Codeine, and PJ Harvey.

Most of his records consist of some lengthy songs and are usually improvised, as are his live shows.

The GWFAA project was initially conceived at the beginning of 2009 to help Tom Honey alleviate the issues caused by suffering from tinnitus, which causes a ringing sensation in the ear and can often result in difficulty sleeping. The idea was to create a collection of relaxing sounds which would help induce sleep.

Luis' interests in sound have carried him from a small border town near Mexico to graduate school in London, then to an unexpected life in Seoul and other cities in Asia. He has exhibited sound installations in various parts of the world and worked on sound scores for films which have premiered in several different countries. A commitment to opening ears to sounds of all natures is what drives him.
