Xumla was born in a search for simplicity. Xumla likes to produce naivety within sound. Marked by gentle, almost fragile melodies, broken rhythmic patterns, minimalistic arrangements and characteristic textured layering of musical themes. Xumla gravitates to the meditative sound and the minimalism in the means of expression. Each work of Xumla is an element of live musical canvas, micro fibers which grow into each other. According to the author of the project, he tends to perceive his micro-sound as a living flesh. He comments the artistic process:

“As a rule, working on some track, I catch the central theme or idea and then I shower it by lots of layers and variations. Then I start to make the way to the core of composition again, removing all unnecessary and leaving only the material that my aesthetic perception does not allow me to refuse.”

I usually work by trying to create forms out of found audio and material extracted from field recordings. I like to think in terms of skins of sounds and what characteristics I can pour into it them to create a hybrid. I take field recordings of everywhere I go, searching for ‘sound marks’ or 'habitats' that I can capture and use to generate new sound designs and inspire new work.

Aidan Baker (born 1974/1975)is a musician from Toronto, Canada who has released numerous records both as a solo artist and as part of various side projects, including Nadja, ARC, and Mnemosyne. He has also written several books of poetry.

He has toured in both North America and Europe, and has made appearances at the OM Festival, MUTEK, South by Southwest, and the Distillery Jazz Festival. He is married to Nadja bandmate, Leah Buckareff.

Baker utilizes a very experimental style of playing guitar, influenced by artists such as Caspar Brötzmann, James Plotkin, Kevin Shields, and Justin Broadrick. Influences on his musical structures and sound include Sonic Youth, Swans, Sunn O))), Red House Painters, Godflesh, Codeine, and PJ Harvey.

Most of his records consist of some lengthy songs and are usually improvised, as are his live shows.

Monty Adkins is experimental sound artist based in remote countryside of the north of England. His work is deeply influenced by the visual arts  and psychogeography resulting in collaborations with a number of painters and digital artists. Inhabiting a post-acousmatic sensibility, Monty’s work draws together elements from ambient, acousmatic and microsound music producing a soundworld characterised by slow shifting organic textures derived from processed instrumental sounds. His work can be found on various labels including Audiobulb, Cronica, Signature, and empreintes DIGITALes. He presents on Eilean Rec. his sixth solo albums since 2009.

Pascal Savy is a French musician who lives and works in London. He creates organic ambient and drone music as a way to reflect on erosion, transition and decay. He utilizes tones, textures, micro-melodies and noise to explore atmospheres rather than narratives. His work often combines acoustic and electronic sources generated from field-recordings, pick-ups, tape loops, feedback, synthesisers or home made electronics which he transforms into dense and layered motifs. His works has been released on Hibernate, Feedback Loop Label & Twisted Tree Lines.

"Adrift is conceived as a sound exploration of a sea area in close proximity of the fictional island of Eilean. The land itself haunts the music as a spectral presence exerting a pull on the narrative and is occasionally seen through a thick veil of mist and fog. From the nocturnal environments depicted in Selfscape, to the more recent organic, otherwordly ambiances of Motus In Rebus and Ocean Themes vol.1, Giuseppe’s music is a constant, silent experiment with sound manipulation and synthesis that aims to distill the nuances of the human condition in a series meticulous, patiently assembled compositions where each sound has a clear and distinct emotional and communicative role.

SMHERTZ is a place for self-exploration through sound and music, regardless of a possible ‘genre’ definition. The intersecting circles in the logo express the concept of Music as the absolute convergence point: nature sounds, music technology, acoustic science and narrative blend into each other through a distinctive sonic signature and style, playing a self defining element in each track.

With many influences from Jazz, HipHop and soundtracks, many SMHERTZ’s tracks and sounds have been used  in documentaries, commercials and independent games.
