Audio Social Mix Series 018 - BLKFT 

BLKFT is Niitsiitapi from Siksika Nation and is the Founder and Manager of Drum Beat Entertainment. He is an award winning DJ, Producer, and Radio Host winning the 2019 National Campus and Community Radio Award for Best Electronic Music Show in Canada. He has been further nominated for the same award in 2022 with further accolades surrounding his work in the music community in southern Alberta and across Western Canada. BLKFT plays an eclectic mix of genres spanning Bass, House, Disco, and Drum and Bass.

Although you can usually find this award winning DJ playing house and Hip-Hop BLKFT mixed things up for the Audio Social series. Stating he found inspiration from listening to friends play bass and drum and bass on the Virtual Pow Wow Music Festival. This inspiration pushed him to expand his skills and listen to more artist who have been killing it within the bass music scene.  His mix reflects that inspiration and includes a variety of art from across Turtle Island.

Thanks to Bass Coast for inviting me back this year, it was such a pleasure to play this year as we celebrated 10 years of quality bass music. The dance floor was packed and an hour and a half timeslot really allowed me to explore everything i wanted to share. Seriously can't thank you all enough. Metafloor X Bass Coast 2018

Jon1st is what some might refer to as a "DJ's DJ." He exists in that oh-so-rare middle ground between technical proficiency, phenomenal taste, musicality, subtlety, and flow that eludes so many DJ's who fall into the "turntablist" category. His appreciation for unique sounds and equally unique approaches to performing and sharing those sounds creates the perfect storm of quality selection and presentation. We've been following Jon for years now, through his official scratch routines for artists like Ivy Lab and Sam Binga, his 2013 Online DMC World Championship win among a multitude of other notable turntablism awards and successes, his radio podcast for Fly High Society and countless other guest mixes for outlets ranging from Ninja Tune's Solid Steel Radio to Tim Parker's NTS to Hyponik to Noisey, and of course, his ever-impressive production chops. Since 2010, he has been doing an annual year-end wrap-up megamix including all of his favorite tunes from the past year blended into an hour-long medley of Jon1st-approved stompers, and we couldn't think of a better way to end 2018 for Booms and Claps. We sat down (metaphorically) for a quick check-in with the man himself to chat about his recent releases, touring, the existential meaning of DJing (apparently it's a lot more than playing two songs at the same time), and of course, this year's wrap-up mix aka BnC Mix 036: Jon1st (2018 Year-End MegaMix). Drifting between melancholy moments, bouts of longing, waves of bliss, and periods of perseverance, I think I’ve captured what happiness feels like as an adult. Not pure joy, but a balance between satisfaction and letting go. There’s light at the end of the tunnel, but even the best moments also pass. The cycle continues.

Please listen with intent. I put a lot of myself into these Hydration Mixes. This is not just a random collection of good tunes, but a meticulously crafted set with chapters and feelings. Put your life into these moments, I’m sure we can all relate.
