Some call it hiphop reggae, some call it reggae hiphop, either way dub meets scratch, rap meets ragga and break meets skank in this 55 minute set. 

I wanted to do a mix using some of the live mashup routines I dropped at events like Reggae Garden in Swindon, Reggae City in Birmingham and Roots Yard at Shambala last summer, alongside some of the dope remixes and full tracks I've been downloading since then. Massive respect to all the artists and remixers of Soundcloud who's tracks I've used on this mix. Please check out the links to the originals and show some love there too.

There's so much dope music out there combining elements of hip hop with different Jamaican styles and it's not really surprising as these are two musical genres that are intrinsically linked, sharing rhythmical roots in Africa and both heavily influenced by American Blues, Jazz and Soul. 

Kool Herc took the Jamaican sound system concept to New York in the late 70s and helped create hip hop, often from funk records with lyrics that echoed the revolutionary message of rasta. 

The creative recycling process of dub music can be closely compared with the tradition of sampling, and emceeing and rapping aren't really so different from a dancehall dj toasting. 

Significantly,both styles reflect a culture that is all about rising above oppression and sufferation.

Semiah est un dubmaker autodidacte issu de la scène underground Rennaise. 
D'abord Selecta, il s'installe dans les Hautes-Alpes en 2003 où il finit par se remettre à la composition musicale en découvrant la MAO. Il construit ses riddims et ses dubs influencé par l'énergie des montagnes.
Passionné de Dub Anglais et tout particulièrement inspiré par des artistes comme "Russ disciples", "Alpha & Omega", "Vibronics", il décide de revenir à ses premiers amours en 2018 pour composer quatre titres stepper aux couleurs mystic de son enfance en Bretagne. C'est en les faisant écouter à ses collègues du "Karabass sound system" qu'il se lance dans la concrétisation de cet Ep.
Il a fait rejouer et recomposer les lignes de guitares avec le guitariste de son groupe "Coloradub". Il a fait intervenir, "Ghilou Bwoy", le trompettiste de "Heckle & Jeckle" et "Samskara", sur une version dub. Il a aussi remixé une de ses premières créations et productions pour l'occasion. Le ton du projet est alors donné par quatre chanteurs qui viennent poser leurs flows et leurs lyrics "conscious".

Le Lab c'est le terrain d'expérimentation de deux jeunes producteurs de Poitiers, Pierre et Roméo, passionnés de Dub et de musiques électroniques. 
Après plusieurs années de prototypes, crash tests et d'expériences à l'issue incertaine, enfin Le Lab se lance dans la composition d'un album. 
Plus d'un an s'est écoulé entre le début de la composition et la sortie de celui-ci.
Composé en MAO, on y voit néanmoins apparaitre guitares, keteh, saxophone et synthétiseurs de musiciens rencontrés au fil du temps et des morceaux, 
sans oublier la chaleur des effets analogiques.
Voici donc 10 morceaux issues du lab', couvrant une large palettes musicale, rendant hommage à la Jamaïque d'antan tout en étant à la recherche de nouvelles sonorités. Bonne écoute!

Le Lab is the experimentation field of two young producers, Pierre and Roméo, big fans of Dub and electronic musics. 
After year of prototypes, crash tests and uncertain experiments, finnaly Le Lab embarks into album production. 
More than a year has passed between beginning of composition and the release. 
Composed with FL studio, you will hear guitars, keteh, sax and synths from musicians encountered during gigs and travels. 
So here's 10 tracks out of the Laboratory, covering a wide range of dub music, paying hommage to the old Jamaican producers, but always looking for new sounds. Have a good listening!
