This work was made as a commission for Art/Activism: The Peer-led Research Group https://www.a-n.co.uk/blogs/art-activism-the-peer-led-research-group/

It is based on the discussions around the book Humankind: A Hopeful History by Rutger Bregman

It was composed using a series of tape loops which were as follows: 
3 loops from the PJ Harvey song 'The Glorious Land' - 2 were percussion loops, and the other was the phrase 'Its fruit is deformed children' - I used this phrase in reference to the ways in which information is being delivered through digital platforms and mechanisations that are continually compromised and have a terrible lack of transparency.  Much of the lack of human kindness that we see in contemporary society, the feelings of alienation and detachment can be traced to the adverse effects of mobile devices and their applications, which are specifically designed to produce addictive behaviours, and reward individualistic behaviours. 

1 tape loop was is from the Bob Marley song 'So Jah Seh' its the line 'and love i-manity'. Rasta always refers to the individual as I & I, this means that we are one with all, I & I not just I. It's the I with every other I the I & I together. The loop talks about I-manity all of us as one. 

1 tape loop was recorded by someone at the 'Infinite Wheel of Time' exhibition. This person recorded themselves just wailing 'nooooooooooooooo'. This just felt like a very real human noise, and Iloved the fact that someone had responded to the work in the first instance, this conversation across time and space, is definitely something which feels in keeping with the message of the book, communication of feeling and openness of spirit to be involved and share a word / noise / gesture in a safe space. 

1 tape loop was taken from the material sent from the 'book club' reading session which says 'what fear they have about whatever the next fear mongering thing is.' 

I also use the story about getting on the train and how the conductor wouldn't let the mistake go and made certain assumptions about what was going on there... 

The piece also includes some record manipulation of David Axelrod's 'The Human Abstract' which is based on the William Blake poem: 

Pity would be no more,
 If we did not make somebody Poor:
 And Mercy no more could be,
 If all were as happy as we;

 And mutual fear brings peace;
 Till the selfish loves increase.
 Then Cruelty knits a snare,
 And spreads his baits with care.

 He sits down with holy fears,
 And waters the ground with tears:
 Then Humility takes its root
 Underneath his foot.

 Soon spreads the dismal shade
 Of Mystery over his head;
 And the Caterpillar and Fly,
 Feed on the Mystery.

 And it bears the fruit of Deceit,
 Ruddy and sweet to eat;
 And the Raven his nest has made
 In its thickest shade.

 The Gods of the earth and sea,
 Sought thro' Nature to find this Tree
 But their search was all in vain:
 There grows one in the Human Brain[3]

The last element is my own reading of statements from the book itself which say: 
'It wasn't a thin membrane at all, but a callus.'
'Please take my place.' 
'all those persistent rumours costing lives...'
'which wolf will win? The one you feed...' 
'Disaster butter sold here.
