“I play and I sing, and every now and then something good happens.”

Brad Wolf is being too modest.  A string of successes have come his way since he brought his extraordinary singing, songwriting and guitar-playing skills to Nashville.  These days, the ruggedly handsome singer is putting the finishing touches on his debut album for Evergreen Records.  So far he’s written every song for the project.

“I’ve got a different story from most folks,” says Wolf.  “I didn’t come to Nashville with my clothes packed—like everybody else.  I came for a weekend, to have some beers, chase some girls and hear some great guitar players.  It’s been a long weekend.”

Where Wolf came from was the tiny settlement of Caryville, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains.  “I was raised by my grandparents on a hillside farm,” he says. “My grandpa had a sawmill, and he was a great guitar player.  He used to tell us, ‘You kids don’t have to play music, but you’re going to learn how before you say no.’”

Wolf needed no such pressure to take up the guitar.  By the time he was “12 or 13,” he was playing in local bands.  “When I was in high school,” he recalls, “I got a gig at the VFW making 30 bucks a night.  I thought I was rich, thought I’d hit the big time.  We played what I call ‘bar music.’ I made more money playing ‘Free Bird’ and ‘Turn The Page’ than Lynyrd Skynyrd and Bob Seger did.”

After a brief flirtation with college (he didn’t like it), Wolf resigned himself to working at the family sawmill and playing music whenever he could.  But then he decided to take that fateful weekend fling in Nashville.  Like most other tourists, he made a beeline for Lower Broadway, where there’s a nightclub on every corner and one or two more in the middle of the block.

The scene was both exhilarating and discouraging.  Wolf walked into one club, and there sat Merle Haggard’s great guitarist, Redd Volkaert, wailing away.  “He was so spectacular,” Wolf remembers, “that I was like, ‘Anybody wanna buy my guitar?’” At another club Wolf visited, the lead guitarist for the house band failed to show up.  Wolf stepped in for the no-show and did so well that the club owner offered him the job permanently.  That meant goodbye to the sawmill.

Within six months, Wolf had attracted so much notice through his club gigs that Tim Wipperman, then chief of the mighty Warner-Chappell publishing company’s Nashville division, offered him a songwriting contract.  “I could not believe they were going to pay me to sit around and write songs,” Wolf marvels.  It was at Warner-Chappell that the fledgling songwriter began to master his craft and learn how the music business works.
