Myths about whales came from the East to the Greeks and thus were included in the Apocrypha. In the Greek “Physiologist”, where the whale is called άσπιδοχελώνη, the same legend is given about it as in the collection of Arabic fairy tales “1001 Nights”: “The whale is like an island; shipbuilders pester him and, driving in stakes, tie ships to them; the monster does not move; but as soon as a fire is lit on its ridge, it immediately goes into the depths, dragging deceived travelers with it.

PREMIERE | The Utilities - Whale Song [Age Of Self] 2022

The mission had been set; all the plans had been in place for months; all the locations scouted and confirmed. They'd been over and over the task in hand to make sure nothing went wrong on the day, but there would always be a chance they'd fail. The repercussions of that happening weren't worth thinking about, all their good work gone to waste in the blink of an eye... Tension gripped the room as they awaited the signal; once it came there'd be no turning back.

Age of Self, the Tel Aviv-based imprint run by Autarkic and Neil Cohen, follows last year's EP from Tamir Hassan with another instalment featuring one of the label bosses. This time round Autarkic teams up with globe-trotting producer Gladys Lazer, the project of fellow Tel Aviv producer and drummer Gal Lazer. On the pair's new EP, Task One, they match sharp metallic textures and tripped out sounds with intricate, and at times frenetic, drum patterns.

The Tenampa podium is set ablaze as Pedro Sanmartin takes center stage with a stunning 3-track release, displaying his deep & soulful sound. Quality music, indeed. 

‘Tourettes’ opens up with melodic grooves. As the song progresses, brass leads bring extra atmosphere and then tense electronica synths glide in to make this a hypnotic voyage. 

Following this is the title track, ‘Memory Lane’, where Pedro’s studio prowess is on full display as he delivers some high grade deep tech workout... Perfect to set the mood of the night. 

Closing out the release is ’Tunnel Vision,’ a bold yet subtle number that showcases Pedro's skills in grand fashion. As the track unfolds, it builds towards a sublime breakdown, retaining tension, and edging into more peak-time territory.

A great production that is sure to earn a spot in your playlist for a while.
