Bristol’s Banoffee Pies Records has gone from strength to strength since it’s inception in 2013. With over 40 artists contributing music to their impressive back catalogue, it is a testament to their a&r skills that every release has offered something fresh and a little left of centre whilst keeping standards sky high. Not a label that churns out club track after club track. If you want something a little deeper and are willing to open your mind and ears then Banoffee Pies is definitely one to research and take time to appreciate the journey they have made to get to this point.

Following on from the triumph that was The Ishmael's debut LP, this latest offering is a 4 tracker featuring music by some new and familiar faces to fans of the label. Label regular NY*AK teams up with UK don Ian Blevins with Watson & Hysteric also turning in cuts.

We are premiering the A2 track by DJ OK & Rasputin entitled ‘Aquazoo’

What hits you instantly about this track is it’s spaciousness and distinctly ethereal vibe. This is not a straight up 4/4 house cut, but do not let that put you off. It is a great track with big snares, big reverberating kick drums, wobbling synth chords, glassy arpeggios and sublime counter melodies. Howard Jones would be proud of the percussion, namely those bongos and cowbells! This is awash with bright and playful synth lines, layers upon layers of classic preset sounds reminiscent of the Fairlights and Yamaha DX7s that defined a decade, a genre and a movement.

I hate clichés but this would fit perfectly in the soundtrack to a cult 80’s film; a track with depth and emotion. DJ OK & Rasputin have nailed this one and while I will admit I am not familiar with their previous work, I look forward to hearing more from them in the near future.

Beesmunt Soundsystem - Flute Valley (Kitjen)

Let’s face it, summer in New York City is sweltering. Even with all the windows open and fans on high, it is hard to find refuge in Alliance Upholstery’s Chinatown offices. Today’s sweat though, is due to the “Dancer on the Shore” EP, the latest release by the Brooklyn based band, Lemonade (Cascine/True Panther Sounds). “Dancer” is a subdued summertime collage of steel drums, buoyant electronic pads and windswept vocals. Joined by Dee Dee from Dum Dum Girls, it is a celebration of the space where humans and nature exist in harmony. Originally released digitally as a single on Cascine in 2015, the band created a DJ friendly extended mix for this release. If you have been to the “Air A Dancer” party over the last few seasons, you have likely already heard it (sometimes twice in one night!). If that wasn’t enough to pique your interest, the remixes put this one over the top. First, the Jex Opolis (Good Timin’/Running Back) Dub picks it up in his Cutlass Supreme (look at his Kingdom, look at his car) with a full day of activities planned. Top down, wind in your hair, cooler full of ice, spf a million; this is Eddie Grant approved dub at beach. Think California Style in Long Island. After sundown, the Whatever/Whatever (Justin Strauss and Bryan Mette) mix builds a bonfire in the dunes. Hard hitting drums and soaring synths make this mix perfect for dancing all night and howling at the moon. As the night gives way to morning, Jex’s vocal remix wipes the sand off your feet, finds your lost t-shirt, and gets you ready for new day.

Lungile Masitha was the short-lived studio name for renowned SA artist Sello ‘Chicco’ Twala, who played with such iconic bands as Harari and Umoja. However, in the mid 80’s his name was under license to one of the major labels and in an effort for self-expression recorded under the name ‘Lungile Masitha’, here he linked up with long term friend Jimmy Mngwandi to co-write and arrange the two tracks ‘Vuyani’ & ‘Makoti’, both sung in his native Tsongan tongue. Vuyani is an upbeat tune that matches Chicco’s unique vocal style with percolating drums and distorted choruses to incredible effect, while Makoti is a mellower blend of floating keys and choruses sung by local kids in an effort to expose “emerging talent”. Due out Jan 29th, distro through Rushhour.

Soundway Records present ’24 Hours in A Disco 1978 - 82’, 7 cuts of relentless disco grooves from the sublimely gifted Kiki Gyan. Hailed as Africa’s answer to Stevie Wonder, Ghanaian multi-instrumentalist Kiki Gyan was a musical wunderkind who by 1975 had risen from the lowly status of high school dropout to being ranked eighth in a poll of the greatest keyboardists in the world (occupying the rarefied air of the top ten with heavyweights like Steve Winwood, Billy Preston, and Stevie Wonder) as well as becoming an in-demand session player in the top recording studios of London - all before his twenty-first birthday. 

Out on his own, he produced a series of highly ambitious disco records aimed at positioning him as an international star, but weighed down by the excesses of the era, Gyan saw his meteoric rise matched by an equally swift fall back into obscurity. 

Loved dearly by his contemporaries and sorely missed since his death in 2005 the story of the life of Kofi Kwarko ‘Kiki’ Gyan is one often told with warning by his friends to the new generation of aspiring Ghanaian popstars.

Soundway Records now collects the best of Gyan’s work as a frontman and solo artist, featuring an array of electrifying disco grooves that still sound contemporary (and in some cases futuristic) decades after their initial release.

Released on CD and 2xLP both formats are accompanied with detailed liner notes written by Uchenna Ikonne. LP version comes with a free MP3 download of the release. 

Kiki Gyan - Disco Dancer

Russian brothers Sasha and Sergey Lipsky return to Disco Halal for the third time under their famed Simple Symmetry project. Following off the back of Auntie Flo’s ‘Kabsa’, the duo’s ‘Gilgamesh’ EP is the fourth release for the label this year and continues to build upon Disco Halal’s successful trajectory.

The ‘Gilgamesh’ EP draws inspiration from the epic novel of the same name, the oldest story known to man. Leading with the title track, Simple Symmetry teams up with Mexican producer Inigo Vontier for a signature Shamanic chugger whilst one of their solo efforts ‘Fight’ is a string-heavy, psychedelic soundscape. Named after Gilgamesh’s faithful sidekick, ‘Enkidu’ continues this kaleidoscopic theme with Krautrock influences with Adam Port’s ‘Tulum By Night’ contrasting edit turns the record into a big room melody. The remix has already been heavily supported by Moscoman, Keinemusik, Âme and Dixon.

Based in Berlin, but firmly rooted in the diverse and forward-facing musical scene of Tel Aviv, Moscoman’s Disco Halal label hails from beneath the minarets of the Holy Land. The imprint exists to present a tight-knit and growing community of musicians and producers, each transmitting their unique musical identity, yet each united by a unique sensibility, as well as a harmonious balance of rhythm and experimentation.

Encompassing elements of downtempo, new-wave and alternative pop, stitched together with a leftfield dancefloor throb, Disco Halal’s back-catalogue, filled with efforts from the likes of Simple Symmetry, The Organism and Moscoman himself, has seen the imprint rapidly emerging from the once-overlooked nightlife and club scene of Tel Aviv into the worldwide spectrum.
