With many thanks to the Riot Ensemble for their help in realising this project: Ausiàs Garrigos (clarinet), Andy Connington (trombone), David Royo (percussion), Fontane Liang (harp), Neil Georgeson (piano), Louise McMonagle (cello) and Aaron Holloway-Nahum (conductor).

The piece is based on the resonant frequencies of Maeshowe, an ancient burial chamber on the Scottish island of Orkney. The frequencies were extracted from the acoustic impulse response and converted from Hz to 12tone equally tempered pitches with cent deviations. The frequencies are played exactly as sine tones and approximated by the instruments in various ways.

Saint-Girons (field recording) was taken during a workshop with Christina Kubisch that captures both the electromagnetic sounds (via Kubisch's headphones) and the acoustic atmospheric sounds of Saint-Girons, France in real-time.


"Saint-Girons" (2018) is an open instrumentation work that utilizes this pre-recorded audio along side two or more performers.

Это (Eto) is a piece of variations inspired by a Russian folk song.
It was performed by David Bremner in Christchurch Cathedral, Dublin - 28.11.12

The piece makes loose use of material from the song titled Кумушки (Kumushki), which features prominently in the film Nostalghia by Andrej Tarkovsky. And recalls a peasant's desires through requests to her peers.
