Founded by an ensemble of multi-faceted musicians and industry professionals, Noise Collective is New York’s largest free music networking event, striving to bring people together in a social environment with the common thread of music. In its first year, the monthly event saw a move from small Brooklyn venues to Manhattan’s Idle Hands Bar, with a necessary takeover of both floors to better accommodate the overwhelming demand. Each month, the meet-ups attract committed regulars alongside a swarm of eager newcomers. “The number of attendees has been on the steady incline since we started these events a year ago, but we’ve seen the numbers increase at a rapid rate in the last few months. This past month, the venue reached capacity on both floors and they were forced to turn people away. It’s been incredibly encouraging to see how many of our peers share the same ideals.”

Noise Collective not only serves as a way for industry professionals to expand their contacts, but offers artists the opportunity to gain exposure to an influential community. Each month promises a host of Spotlight Guests, heavy-hitters spanning a variety of fields in the music industry. Some past guests include representatives from The Agency Group, Atlantic Records, The Island Def Jam Music Group, BMI, Live Nation, AEG Entertainment, talent buyers from top New York City venues, and even a special appearance from Brian Viglione of The Dresden Dolls. Through this unique industry collaboration, NCNY aims to bridge the gap between artist and industry, allowing for connections to be made in a relaxed, communal environment.

In addition to their highly sought-after monthly gatherings, Noise Collective actively engages with many aspects of the music community. In October 2013, they hosted a successful CMJ showcase, packing a full house with major label acts taking the stage, while more recently, the group has taken on the development of a songwriting workshop with a songwriting showcase to debut at Rockwood Music Hall this February. Never wanting to become insular, NCNY has concrete plans to expand to several major US cities in the coming months.

In a city that can often come across as daunting and unapproachable, Noise Collective provides an alternative to impersonal exchanges and unwelcoming spaces. “It was born out of a noticeable lack of community within the New York music scene and a necessity for a central gathering point where people could meet, share ideas, and help each other learn how to do what we do better, without any exclusivity. We’re accepting of anyone who has an interest in being a part of our community. If music is your passion, Noise Collective is your scene.”

While on a writing retreat in the sleepy southern town of Benton, Mississippi, the members of New York's Ava Luna came across an abandoned house while on a walk through the woods.  Overgrown, rotting, and littered with evidence of its past inhabitants, the maze-like dwelling would haunt their psyches throughout the writing and recording of their third full-length Infinite House.  Like Borges' "Library of Babel", the seemingly endless rooms and hallways in the old house felt like a metaphor for the invisble, internal labyrinths, which the band explores lyrically and sonically on their new album.  

Self-recorded in Benton and at Gravesend Recordings, the Brooklyn studio run by drummer Julian Fader and vocalist/guitar player Carlos Hernandez, and mixed by Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Spoon, MGMT), it is safely their most polished recording to date. But their trademark intensity, mirthful humor, and angularity remain resolutely in place, the burnished surfaces illuminating the stories beneath like never before.  Working with Fridmann, Fader and Hernandez artfully employ the studio to further the album's preternatural vibe.  As Hernandez explains "Dave Fridmann was able to augment this music in a really special way, removing it from the literal realm and putting it in a really psychedelic/fictional place."  By questioning, or maybe just forgetting the rules of the real world, on Infinite House the band has grown beyond the "nervous soul" descriptor they've been tagged with in the past, delivering an album on which nightmarish moments can phoenix into revelations that help us reconnect with the surreal magic in our everyday lives.  Of course, you don't have to dig into the intellectual concepts or references to love this album, or enjoy the band's twisted mystical perspective.  On a very superficial level, these songs are sensual, vibrant, and fun.

Carlos Hernandez is the son of a ’70s New York soul DJ. After a detour playing in punk and noise projects, he returned to his soul roots and formed Ava Luna, a band of two girls and four guys, to explore a sound that combines all those ideas.
