Avenue Red is proud to present a pair of masterful deep/dub techno mixes created by Alastair Kelly, who comes from the seaside town of Ryde on the north edge of the Isle of Wight, just a few miles off England's south-central coast.

Alastair is the man behind the awesome Lempuyang label, which goes from strength to strength as it builds out its impressive roster of luminaries in the deep/dub techno sphere. Lempuyang has pressed and dispatched new weapons-grade materials from many of Avenue Red's most beloved artists, having clocked up 10 releases since the label's inception in late 2021.

These artists include some of our previous guests and good friends: OHM, Octal Industries and Hydergine; Manchester's Vinyl Exchange record shop boss and artist J.S. Zeiter; Mosaic label boss Steve O'Sullivan AKA Bluetrain; Icelandic legend Yagya; Japanese artist Altone; Moscow artist Anton Kubikov; Canadian dub techno specialist Deadbeat and mysterious mad hatter Sa Pa, among others.

It's truly staggering how far this label has come in 1 short year! These two mixes from Alastair help to colour in the picture of his inspirations and trace how these roots extend to the shoots of his flourishing new imprint, along the way showcasing some of the sublime material it has released so far. Owain recently played at our Avenue Red event held at The Loco Klub in Bristol in March 2023, which turned into an incredible 4-hour B2B session with Avenue Red frontman Alec Pritchard. Avenue Red was on recording duties as two of Manchester's finest oldskool house heads got together for a dig through the archives. This was at Damo B's long-running regular event, Nothing But The Truth held @ Eastern Bloc, Manchester from the hours of 22:00-03:00. This recording captures the proceedings after the first 40 minutes had passed by.

For those who don't know... Damo B is the presenter and producer of The Outta Limits Radio Show, exclusively on Manchester's Unity Radio 92.8 FM and online on www.unityradio.fm every Thursday night from 1am until 3am UK Time. "Techno, House and Electronica all up in the mix" is both the catchphrase and the solid gold truth. Damo also runs the burgeoning new label named Emotec, which has pressed EPs from MOY, BufoBufo, Auto Sound City and Rain & White Transit Van to date.

LHK (real name Liam Swarbrick) states that he is generally "retired" these years, but Damo helps to give him a platform on the odd occasion to keep his hand in the game. LHK released over 20 ace house records from 1998-2006 on cult labels including Glasgow Underground, Leeds label 20:20 Vision, Toronto label 83 West Records and the San Francisco-based Tango Recordings (run by fellow Mancunian Tony Hewitt), among other labels.

Avenue Red Podcast #227 - Sarah Goldfarb

Avenue Red Podcast 029 is an exclusive mix by Jori Hulkkonen, recorded live at a recent event called "My House Is Your House" at a venue called Portti, playing a vinyl-only set at a rare appearance in his hometown of Turku in Finland. Originally hailing from the rather remote Northern town of Kemi in the Lapland region (a place from which The Northern Lights can be seen on 100 days per year), Jori has consistently been a truly inspired innovator throughout a productive music career spanning over two decades, rendering a rich and eclectic discography of releases including a dozen full studio albums, dozens of singles and remix projects counting into the 200's.

A mainstay artist on Eric Morand & Laurent Garnier's (sadly now defunct) F Communications label, Jori's musical output has bled into many different genres and styles, mostly ranging from House to Techno and Electro to Ambient. He has done some conceptual artistic work too, having assembled the Acid Symphony Orchestra in 2007 - an experimental, avant-garde, 11-man techno ensemble featuring ten Roland TB-303's - performing a raw score all written, conducted and mixed by Jori.

As a DJ, Jori has played all over the world and played at hundreds of clubs and festivals throughout the years since the early 90's. His luscious style of high quality, melodic, groovin' House music was brilliantly captured on his famed Radio One Essential Mix from 2002 (https://soundcloud.com/blanche/jori-hulkkonen-essential-mix-2002-02-03) and this mix for our series has distinct echoes of that brilliant session and that era of House music in general. Hope you're ready to hear some classic and obscure House gems woven in true style by a master of the business... Enjoy the mix everyone!

We are hereby served an eclectic platter of perfect summer solstice vibes. Finest vinyl-only ingredients of house, techno, electro, IDM — it's all there with a red candied cherry on top. "We set our aims on a b2b-mix what feels like ages ago, and in relative terms it is, because it was during winter '20/'21 that we reconnected (being former colleagues at a record shop) and started doing sessions. We always had a good sense of where the other one is, emotionally and musically, so it's been a wholesome journey exploring our collections in tandem.

There are numerous overlaps regarding which artists and labels we both admire, but surprisingly enough we own very few of the same singles and albums. Oftentimes when playing we discover lacunae in discographies we otherwise thought we knew, scrambling to note down an identifier, or, conversely, one of us simply starts nodding — a gesture every music head recognises — when realising exactly what record the other is bringing into the mix... ah, yes, many are the prized-but-not-necessarily-pricey tunes we've shared in ecstatic and all kinds of altered states!

Still, we've been sitting on many a recording without letting loose. After a good three years, now, it's about time we share a moment of that local synergy; fuelled by energy derived from all them creators, the initiators and innovators and elevators, the rebels and renegades of machine funk." "Heyo, so I'm really bad at writing text in general. But I can send some links (see below). I run the label Nonyobiz Records. My old alias was Hypno. Recently I have been working on releases on Iceland labels Móatún 7 and Intellitronic Bubble under various guises. But essentially I have been producing music for about 15-20 years, almost exclusively in Ableton Live and various hardware. Most recently I have been digging my heels into the modular world. My current techno alias/project is Hidden People for the pure techno side of things. DJ Allskynz is for the rest like breakbeat, ambient, house etc.

Masterclass sets from all who played there, with this live set from Reedale Rise (real name Simon Keat) being one of the highlights to shine on this wonderful soundsystem in a visually stunning venue. It was ace to also unexpectedly bump into some key agents of organised UK underworld deepness, including Miles Atmospheric of Atmospheric Existence Recordings, Bovill of cult label Meanwhile and many others! Quality > quantity. Keep the faith and enjoy the ride, the tide and the vibes inside! 🌊🌊🌊

"This set was recorded directly from my live performance at Faith In Strangers, Margate earlier this year for Ornate Music and 50arc. The venue is fantastic with a beautifully tuned sound system, views over the sea, and lovely hospitable staff. The event was a chance for me to catch up with people I'd not seen since before the pandemic and put some faces to online names, including Avenue Red's very own Alec.

My live set has changed a lot over the years and the current evolution is all unreleased house and techno tracks. The music I play live has moved in this direction simply because it's more relevant to the dancefloor and more fun to perform to a crowd than some of my deeper electro tracks. Gear-wise, I've added a Roland TR8S drum machine to Ableton, which has allowed me more opportunity to improvise and react spontaneously. Listening back, I'm happy with how the set sounds and hope it resonates with people. Avenue Red turned up to Affinity at Eastern Bloc Records in Manchester's Northern Quarter back on the 17th July 2024... what a night! Event founder Max Howard AKA Maxxitrax had just kicked off a delightfully enchanting warm-up set and our ever-trusty recorder was plugged into the mixer, soundchecked and activated as quickly as possible... sadly the first few very dazzling and trippy records were missed from the recording, but what was captured 'till the end of his set was just beautiful. Max is clearly a selector's selector with top drawer technical skills. Proper solid intro vibes for a vibrant, hot summers evening session on Stevenson Square, which also later featured Tribe, Damo B and DJ Mindbender. And finally... here it is!

"This is a recording of my opening set from my last Affinity party held at Eastern Bloc. I wanted to use the opportunity to play records that I wouldn't get to play in a peak time or closing slot that I will usually play in. I had picked some records out that fit this narrative but turned up without a game plan. Luckily I managed to work things out so that I could play some soul tracks to start out with and then build tension up gradually. I really enjoyed the process, hopefully the listeners will enjoy it too.

"For me this is a personal summer soundtrack, but not just for 2016. This is a choice selection of old, timeless favourite cuts that bring back memories of hot, sunny days and really set the scene. There was only room for a 2 or 3 newer tracks on this one. In the beginning the mood is from a nice summer afternoon, later I imagine that it's getting slowly dark outside, until the sun goes up again (last 2 tracks).

Avenue Red Podcast #125 - Alessandro Crimi

The Avenue Red Podcast presents a fresh addition to the roster. Welcome Kyrro (real name George Kury) who is originally from France and is now based in Amsterdam, the Dutch capital city full of red light districts, trippy weed cafes and intriguing bars and clubs with a strong undercurrent of underground electronic music culture.

Kyrro sent us a few mixes in the past and there was a sad story: an accidental data loss occurred on both sides and an incredible 1-hour mix he created to be released on Avenue Red was lost forever. This is the new improved version, the final directors cut, which has come 1 year later and we are over the moon to be able to finally do this!

One word comes to mind from the sounds within: Glacial. This mix really captures a mood of travelling through cold icy waters and exploring landscapes full of glaciers... the loneliness, the isolation - apart from the odd polar bear - and the beautifully barren nature of such a place is all wrapped up into one dreamy, textured package... full of echo, melancholy and slow, timeless motion.

"I grew up in France in the 90's playing electric guitar and experimenting with synthesizers. I produce analogue soundscapes using hardware tools with a mix of raw elements and a modern touch. I love living in Amsterdam where I am constantly working to shape deep and ambient electronics into my own sound, while continuing to explore new musical horizons.

The Avenue Red Podcast brings yet another new name to the series as we present the artist, collector, DJ and WarmState Records label boss known as NEZ (real name Amaury Rondon) from Santo Domingo, the 1-million-strong capital city of the Dominican Republic. This is the first time we have featured a DJ from the Caribbean.

The WarmState Podcast recently featured episodes from Avenue Red frontman Alec Pritchard and resident Andy Green. We recognised the strong work going into this label and after some discussions, this killer mix followed from NEZ - a trailblazing, sublimely mixed selection of warm, bouncy, groovy tech house and deep house sounds from the underground.
