A selection of some of my favourite house records from 10 years ago all the way back to the late 80's. This early house music inspired me to live with obsession around it and some of these records still sound so fresh and upfront today... so full of character and life... so colourful, especially when held up against the backdrop of some of the modern house music blandness that abounds in all it's different shades of grey.

I believe there are some new producers out there who are genuinely taking house music in their stride and injecting their own uniqueness and pushing it forward. To me it seems those are the ones that also keep one foot in the past, who have a knowledge of the heritage of true house music and who really understand it in essence and where it came from. Some people out there need to realise that it just needs to be called "House" and if it is deep, the people will hear and feel that for themselves.

***By the way, people have asked so I'll write it on here... the guy in the picture is me, and that actually is my old house (now sadly derelict), as well as the fact that these are my old house records.

There Be Love In Da Vibes (Version 38)

Raw recording on Thursday 19th January 2023, great fun night full of optimism and top class music live @ Café Bakeliet, Rotterdam, Netherlands. What an amazing bar vibe and record store Micha has created there since I last saw him in his native Amsterdam in 2019! It's really worth a visit for anyone.

Picture taken out of a taxi window in downtown Rotterdam on my way to see Micha, where he awaits spinning delicious, trippy trip-hop vibes on a wooden stool. Perfect craft beers, cloudy Dutch wines and other local delights were served up over the 3 hours, amid philosophical chats about life, earth, geopolitics, the end etc... don't expect the smoothest of mixing. You can't have it all!! 🤣

Top class gentleman, DJ and Distant Worlds label owner from South London - Paul Rimbaud - has joined the philosophical ride, enticing us into his inner sanctum with an expressive mix of 90's vibes rave & breaks action. The "matchball" he refers to below is to get a mix onto my new Nietzsche Lessons series, Avenue Red and Avenue Red 1210 - the only man in the known universe to do so, so far. And he's smashed this one 5-0. Invisible mixing, totally seamless. Get your raving boots on. Reach for the lasers. Safe as fuck!

Paul Rimbaud wrote: "God is dead" spoke Nietzsche but somewhat negated the power of the declaration when he went and died himself, thus allowing God to declare "Nietzsche is dead". At least he would have if Nietzsche hadn't already done him dirty. Anyways turns out that the only positive maxim we can lay our faith in these days regards the late 20th century assertion that "hardcore will never die". Accordingly I've engaged in a Hegelian dialectic on the hardcore continuum in an effort to reach some degree of polyrhythmic synthesis; old stuff, new stuff, all sharing a common denominator - the breakbeat. 

To be quite honest, being a miserable sod, I always related more to Schopenhauer personally but I think we can all at least agree that there has never been a party that hasn't been livened up by debating long-dead German existentialists. In a direct affront to nihilism I am proud to collect the Pritchard match ball with this mix so may I implore all the listeners to let inspiration be your ecstasy and ecstasy, your inspiration.

Old live recording I just found on my hard drive... Again, just me playing through reams of eclectic records @ F L ō K bar in Manchester's Northern Quarter just over a year ago. I remember having taken this picture after the session ended prematurely as some drunken fools locked their mate into the old bank vault in the basement. The fire brigade had to be called out to free him. Nobody was hurt, but the bar owner had to pay a hefty fine for not sealing off the locking mechanism to prevent this happening!

More than 10 years after the previous episode number 08, the Cement Mixer has resumed its churning. Manchester selector Wilson Logan of Quadrant Soundscape / Dub Explorations gets busy loading it up!

"If this were a film there would be a cut scene that says “10 years later”. It's not a film so there is no cut scene. It is still 10 years later however and I have the honour of refuelling the mixer and churning out some more concrete.

This is a mix that has haunted my sub-conscious for about a year now. Something I've been meaning to record for a long time. A mix full of left-field, back of the crate selections, stuff I love but sadly very rarely get to play. House, Techno, Electro, Breakbeat, Hypnotic Salad Jazz, Amish House, Terminator 2 (Judgement Day) Techno etc.

It's all in there. In fact, any genre you can think of or make up is in there, (even if it's not, it is).

Its all in the mix, and it's all cement.

I felt inspired to record a very disco-influenced mix today after Giovanni Damico shared a classic Blue Boy track (Funky Friday) on his page that I had totally forgotten about... I ended up going nuts, tearing through loads of disco-influenced records in my collection and concocted this. Totally crazy disco stuff, loosely-timed beats and funky as hell all the way. And yes, that Blue Boy track is featured ;)

Alec Pritchard - Summer Breeze (Mix For Dianne) (VINYL ONLY) (19-07-2024)

I found this WAV file from 6th Febuary 2006 on an old hard-drive, a live recording I made on a Korg Electribe ES-1 MkII.

This was made in one take, a live performance direct on this classic old skool sequencer & sampler unit. I had loaded in samples of Boards Of Canada's "Smokes Quantity" track ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhJ5TxQTSK8 ) from their 1998 album, Music Has The Right To Children. The resultant recording came out rather like a reconstruction of the original...

This forgotten track was found at a time when I had a spare afternoon so used the free time to make a music video for it ( see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhYza9V9S_Q ) using footage from a 1946 US War Office film called "A Tale of Two Cities" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXit97UP1IY ). I thought that the fuzzy analogue warmth of the synth samples and the effects used called for some old video footage full of distortion and artefacts, and the apocalyptic futurism of BOC's works have always made me think of nuclear destruction and the aftermath. Hope it goes down nicely!

Just a lil' bit of loosey-goosey wicki-wicki wahhh-wahhh on the trusty Technics SL-1210MK5 1's & 2's. This was done expressly in order to hear some nice music songs back to myself... music songs which are in my collection of vinyl records because I had bought each of them at various times in the past. Having pressed the record button on my trusty high resolution audio recorder device before I started playing them, I had in the end precipitated the existence of a recording of about 2 hours in duration. That being because that was how long I was playing them for. Having heard back the vibes in this witches brew, I decided to upload it for me and for you.

I tried to upload this a long time ago, closer to when it was recorded yet it could not poke through the canopy of weeds... SoundCloud had a very harsh punitive system of nuking anything that started with any detectable copyrighted tune (quite rarely the case for me so almost all other mixes were unaffected). Now things are relaxed I thought I would attempt to upload it again, bloody 15 years on! It's nothing too special just me spinning some wax, CD's and some real good tracks xx

Almost 3 hours in the mix laying down some slow, deep, moody sounds moving through to some faster, tougher deep stuff. Maybe the fact that the heating had broken down on the icy cold night this was mixed had something to do with the vibes I laid down?! Vinyl only, off-the-cuff, one take, imperfections included.

Recorded using 2 x Reloop RP-7000 Turntables and an Allen & Heath Xone:23. Picture taken in my home county of Gloucestershire, England, overlooking May Hill near The Forest of Dean.

So at 7am this morning after a heavy Friday night, I made some scotch whisky disappear and decided to record a mix from this hunk of records. Done in headphones only, so to avoid being shouted at! As with all of my mixes, but perhaps more so than any other... this one is a deep bastard - I'm talking "it would take 2 hours for a big fucking ship to strike the basin" deep.

A selection of older and newer material from the great ocean of techno. Opening with some glowing, deep and melodic sounds, we traverse through the razor sharp sonics of Quantec (a track from his new album, <a href="http://www.discogs.com/Quantec-1000-Vacuum-Tubes/release/3644316" target="_blank">1000 Vacuum Tubes</a>) and the minimal mystique of Grad_U to some blissed out and sublime electronic dub tracks including a classic cut from Rhythm & Sound.

A sequence of zoned-out atmospheric tech house brings this mix home with some very special new tracks on some of my favourite labels, including Telrae, Illian Tape and Echocord before we close up with an absolutely timeless track, "Evil Dub" taken from Swayzak's 1998 classic <a href="http://www.discogs.com/Swayzak-Snowboarding-In-Argentina/master/64157" target="_blank">Snowboarding In Argentina LP</a>.

Back with another cluster-bomb deployment to see out 2012, this one is an epic 2-hour assault of deep house and techno beats. Opening with the sugar-sweet melodica of Christian Löffler with "Signals" taken from <a href="http://www.discogs.com/Christian-L%C3%B6ffler-A-Forest/release/3772426" target="_blank">A Forest</a> - an album that for me was one of 2012's finest exports - we develop the melodic theme via a King Britt rework of Chymera, a flashback from Kid Crème and an all-Polish contribution with the serene Reprise remix of Jacek Sienkiewicz on his Warsaw-based Recognition label.

We head deeper underground with the thundering, hypnotic techno of Marco Zenker which sets us off into some different territories with a nod to <a href="http://www.discogs.com/DeepChord-Vantage-Isle/release/874938" target="_blank">a killer 2007 release from DeepChord</a>, the hazy warmth of "Echo Welt" (Deutsch für "Echo World") by the incredible Timewriter, and some more electro-edged tracks. Mike Shannon sends us deep into outer space en-route to the slammin' Forteba remix of Vexus T with a story about how your life is like "a book of empty pages" that you must fill with your every decision and action. Fucking right on!!! I'll take one year at a time, and hopefully 2013 is going to be a year full of empty (digital) mixtapes that I'm going to fill with amazing music!

This mix is a house music depth charge! It pays homage to the early deep house sounds that have been so inspirational for me, and many of the tracks featured here are personal all-time favourites. Kicking off with an epic, eerie late-90's cut from Fonka Delix, AKA Tech House messiah Terry Lee Brown Junior, the mood is set for what is to come for the next 80 minutes: blissed-out beats, warm basslines and atmospheric, meandering melodies. Proper spliff tunes that elevate your state of mind to a place better than the norm.

The transitions in this mix are especially smooth and seamless, as you will gather from the first mix into Kevin Yost & Peter Funk. Two back-to-back mixes of a classic E-Tones record inject the beach vibes, Nick Holder's "Trying To Find Myself" gets you lost in the dancefloor of your mind and the Sheffield boys known as SWAG get things groovin' strong with their classic remix of Gamat 3000's "Whispering". A very listenable mix of quality, timeless house music from the archives to complete the 4-part set.
