The goal of this course is for you to sharpen your critical lenses and construct thesis-based arguments around the big questions in comedy.  

This course was imagined by Kiik Araki-Kawaguchi who has been working with the Sixth College Writing Program for five years. He has stolen a lot of people's lunches from the community refrigerator during this period. 

Kiik also taught a combination CAT 124/125 course called “Divine Comedy” which was a Practicum and upper-division writing class where students wrote, workshopped and performed standup comedy.

For the purposes of this SoundCloud podcast, Kiik will be recording as his pseudonym, Tommy the Yellow Labrador. Tommy the Yellow Labrador follows the work of many comedians including Amy Schumer, Chris Rock, Louis CK, Wanda Sykes, Dave Chappelle and Aziz Ansari. 

Tommy the Yellow Labrador believes there can be transformative power in comedy. As performer/comedian/TED Fellow Chris Bliss says, “The best comedy circumvents our ingrained perspectives . . . [comedy] takes the base metal of our conventional wisdom and transforms it through ridicule into a different way of seeing and ultimately being in the world.” 

Even though Kiik is clearly writing this Bio, he prefers to think of himself in the third-person.

I'm T.A.Z., aka Teaching Assistant Zac, aka educatron. 

If I were a character in an English-dubbed anime, I'd be primarily featured in DVD-only omakes involving eating competitions or cooking-related pratfalls. This, because my main scenes were cut during localization for being "a bummer" (quoted from a production executive).

I was born in New Jersey, and grew up (with The Simpsons) in a wooded town that surrounds the town where the Hindenburg crashed. I'm a Literature PhD with a focus in Literatures in Spanish, with further focus in translation and puppy studies (#polyphonicsquadgoals).

Just the average import from across the Pacific. No, that does not mean that I wave the red flag with yellow stars scattered across it (though I can’t deny my love for stars) or that I have that stereotyped accent.. thank you very much.
Never a declared fan of comedy but I’ll be discussing it anyway. I’ll try my best, but don’t expect too much.

Born in Switzerland and raised in Germany, with family roots in South Korea, versatility is essentially part of his DNA. Trying himself in various classical instruments throughout his youth, Chaël eventually discovered electronic music. “Making music is what drives me. It feels good and is fun,” he says. "Beyond that, however, I always hope to bring something positive to other people as well, whatever that means for the individual listener." 

Chaël's highlights to date include the single "Don't Speak," released in 2020, with more than 15 million streams, more than 700k Shazams and a top 10 placement in Russia. And that was just the beginning. The next sonic rush might be happening this very minute.
