Fatoumata Diawara (a.k.a. Fatou) was born of Malian parents in the Ivory Coast in 1982. As a child she became a member of her father’s dance troupe and was a popular performer of the wildly flailing didadi dance from Wassoulou, her ancestral home in western Mali. She was an energetic and headstrong girl and at the age of 12 her refusal to go to school prompted her parents to send her to live and be disciplined by an aunt in Bamako. She was not to see her parents again for more than a decade. 

Her aunt was an actress, and a few years after arriving, Diawara found herself on a film set looking after her aunt’s infant child. The film’s director was captivated by Diawara’s adolescent beauty and she was given a one-line part in the final scene of the film Taafe Fangan (The Power of Women). This led to a lead role in a film by the celebrated director Cheick Omar Sissoko: 1999’s La Genèse (Genesis). 

At the age of 18 Diawara travelled to Paris to perform the classical Greek role of Antigone on stage. After touring with the production she returned to Mali where she was given the lead in Dani Kouyaté’s popular 2001 film Sia, The Dream of the Python. The film tells the story of a West African legend called Sia, a young girl who defies tradition. To many in Mali, Guinea, Senegal, and Burkina Faso, Diawara is Sia thanks to the film’s enormous success throughout the region.

Offers for further acting roles poured in but Diawara’s family wanted her to settle down and marry and forced her to announce, live on Malian television, that she was abandoning her career as an actress. 

In 2002 Jean-Louis Courcoult, the director of the renowned French theatre company, Royale de Luxe, travelled to Bamako to offer Diawara a part in his new production. An unmarried woman is considered a minor in Malian society so her family’s permission was required. They refused. After much soul-searching Diawara took the daring decision to run away and at the Bamako airport she managed to board a plane for Paris, narrowly escaping the pursuit of the police who had been alerted to the girl’s “kidnapping.” 

With Royal de Luxe, Diawara performed a variety of roles around the world including tours in Vietnam and Mexico and throughout Europe. During rehearsals and quiet moments she took to singing backstage for her own amusement. She was overheard by the director and was soon singing solo during the company’s performances. Encouraged by the reception from audiences she began to sing in Parisian clubs and cafes during breaks from touring. Here she met Cheikh Tidiane Seck the celebrated Malian musician and producer who invited her to travel with him back to Mali to work on two projects as chorus vocalist; Seya, the Grammy–nominated album by Malian singer Oumou Sangaré, and Red Earth, the Grammy–winning Malian project by American jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater. When the albums were released Diawara toured worldwide as singer and dancer with both artists.

Emerging in 2002, Singateh indisputably is one of the country’s finest sensations that made a successful crossover from reggae to dancehall and Afro beat. Born Alhagie Singateh in 1982, in the Central River Region town of Bansang, Singateh was among the first  artists in his generation to hit the international market. 
Due to his promising future in the music scene, Singateh was soon nicknamed after his first hit single ‘Singateh Rise’. With steady rise, he soon began performing with the local Gambian sound systems.
It was in his mid-20s’ when he embarked on his first international tour of the United States of America, courtesy of African Artists Association based in Brooklyn, New York. In 2006, he joined the Megga Force Records stationed in Germany.
With keen passion and love for music, Singateh always returned home after his international trips for recording sessions and concerts. His career catapulted to international recognition when he soon hooked up with Pa Ous, a Gambian radio DJ cum Studio Engineer based in the US, who also founded The Gambian Talents Promotions.
“This connection soon proved to be a worthwhile venture, as Pa Ous got me  gig dub plates in the U.S. One of those records “Give Me the Love” became a huge hit among reggae fans in New York, and its follow-up, “HIT with Megga Force Records” as it was on various riddims and line ups across Europe,” said Singateh.
INTERNATIONAL TOURS
Few years later, Singateh has proven to the music world that he is an artist par excellence and one of the first young Gambian artists to embark on annual tour of Europe and America, which accords him the opportunity to perform in all major cities across Europe notably in Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Swiss, Spain, Italy, Austria.  Elsewhere in Europe, Singateh staged series of concerts in London in the United Kingdom and was the first Gambian artist to perform at the Africa Music Awards also known as AMA in 2009. He also staged concerts in Birmingham, Reading, Leeds, Manchester and Glasgow in Scotland.
While in the United States of America, Singateh performed in Seattle, Maryland, Atlanta, Texas in Dallas, and Toronto in Canada. Sooner than anticipated, he became one of the most highly rated and recognised Gambian artists nationwide as he continues to create his own style of music.
According to Singateh, his mode of dress also enabled him to attract more fans thus making him fans’ favorite star. However, what makes his music stand out is that the international star doesn’t limit his career to only The Gambian local market, over the years he  managed to sell thousands of his CD´s abroad during his internationals tours, and this makes his music popular internationally.
COLLABORATIONS
In his unending quest to go extra miles as far as music is concerned, he has over the years collaborated with a number of international artists and this has enabled him to add more flavours to his career. The top  artists he collaborated with includes; Emmersion, K-Man, Jungle Leaders, Tony Anthony and Skibu Foster all from Jamaica, and a host of other Gambian artists.
