Waaju believe in highlighting the world's connection through less familiar creative collaboration. Encapsulating influence from a number of cultures across Africa, South America & beyond, the band delves deeper to leave behind preconception & promote forces largely unexplored in a Western context. Citing the rich history of Malian music as centrepiece, Waaju presents the vision of drummer & percussionist Ben Brown which draws from the exceptional spirit of the likes of Ali Farka Toure, Oumou Sangare, Tinariwen & Baba Sissoko.

The Hidden Notes 

When a musician plays a note of a certain pitch, the musical instrument resonates, producing a complex pattern of sound waves made up of many different frequencies. The most noticeable sound wave is called the fundamental, but there are other waves with higher frequencies, called harmonics. These are the hidden notes.

John Martin has spent the last 4 years coaxing these rather shy and often badly behaved notes out from their hiding places. Through the use of special fingerings and blowing techniques it is possible to produce several notes simultaneously, extending the sound world of the saxophone from a monophonic to a polyphonic instrument. Martin's focus is on incorporating these polyphonic sounds into tonal music.

Circular breathing then allows for the development of continuous rhythmic patterns, opening up many new exciting rhythmic and textural possibilities.

London-based  band Awalé returns with a new sound, Senegalese soul. Biram Seck’s  soaring voice evokes messages of love and peace, underpinned by heavenly  poly-rhythm groove explorations. Intense and spiritual Sabar Senegalese  percussion and Afro-Latin drums conversations, weaving intricate guitar  patterns and horn lines with catchy bass riffs. Like a spinning  kaleidoscope of sounds, each tune travels on a varied musical journey,  from afrobeat to soul, deep Afro-jazz to Latin. Awalé is on a mission  to experience happiness together in these fractured times.

Soothsayers' music contains deep, hypnotic grooves, punctuated by emotive horn lines and sublime vocal harmonies. Lyrically conscious, Soothsayers create a deep and spiritual musical experience, and have built up a loyal fan base through their consistently high quality live performances around the world and their expanding catalogue of vinyl and cd releases on their own Red Earth label. Comparisons to the work of the Wailers and Fela Kuti go some way to describing the Soothsayers’ sound, but originality is the key to the continuing success and longevity of the group.
