The first album of Web Web is very uncut, raw, live and direct. „Oracle“ is the first output of a German Supergroup. Check the musician credits below and you’ll get the score. The initial idea was to record a spiritual- jazz type of album, with all its imperfection as far as intonation, sound, influences of tunes... just like from their big jazz-heroes in the 70ies (e.g. Strata East, Black Jazz).
Web Web’s idea was to record a jazz jam session while to found and proclaim being a fictive band, a formation, which did not exist, while telling people, it would be a secret jam session recording of the Seventies. The prompt problem they were facing: Oh, we never would be able to play concerts, doing interviews, or placing photos on sleeves or post likeness images online. So they decided to reveal their real identities:

Roberto Di Gioia (Piano, Synth, Percussion), Tony Lakatos (Tenor- and Sopranosaxophone), Christian von Kaphengst (Upright Bass) and Peter Gall (Drums).

Roberto Di Gioia (Mastermind of Web Web): „The four of us set up very close in a big room, so we could hear and feel each other the best way. The music became more intensive, improvisations became more dynamic and it was impulsive.“

The album „Oracle“ was recorded on one day, only first takes were used!

We want to keep the burning spirit and the loose vibe we had during the recording session. And we play concerts the wild and free way we recorded this album. Web Web will be on tour 2018, but playing a few concerts in 2017. Furthermore, one main decision to blab their real identities was: The second Web Web album is recorded in June (with guests like the famous and unique Gembri-player and multiinstrumentalist and singer Majid Bekkas from Morocco).
Both albums were engineered, recorded and mixed by Jan Krause (Beanfield, Poets Of Rhythm).

Roberto Di Gioia: „Tony was tuning his Soprano too high, and his (overdubbed) tenor way too flat!

My synthesizers were somewhere in between...HA! We exactly had the sound we had in our minds, we had it exactly there were we wanted it: a bit of Sun Ra here, a bit of Horace Tapscott there.
On some tunes Tony’s soprano just sounds like a trumpet, since due to his weird tuning the soprano develops different frequencies in relation to other instruments.“

Upon popular request, TDR presents the instrumentals and re-edits of Tensei's uplifting 'Constellate' release. 

Tensei (meaning "Heaven Star" in Japanese) is the Chicago based producer tandem of Midas Wells and Chris Kramer. The music represents a soulful, electronic and hip hop infused perspective to Chicago's growing spiritual jazz movement, with many of the movement's protagonists such as Makaya McCraven, Brandee Younger, Greg Spero, Junius Paul, Khari Lemuel, Kevin Mitchell and Paul Curtis joining the recording sessions for the album.

It's been a long, winding road to Hailu Mergia's sixth decade of musical activity. From a young musician in the 60s starting out in Addis Ababa to the 70s golden age of dance bands to the new hope as an emigre in America to the drier period of the 90s and 2000s when he mainly played keyboard in his taxi while waiting in the airport queue or at home with friends. More recently, with the reissue of his classic works and a re-assessment of his role in Ethiopian music history, Mergia has played to audiences big and small in some of the most cherished venues around the world. With his 2018 critical breakthrough "Lala Belu" Mergia consolidated his legacy, producing the album on his own and connecting with listeners through his vision of modern Ethiopian music. Extensive touring after the record revealed an artist who is in no way stuck in the nostalgia for the “golden age” sound. The press agreed, including the New York Times, BBC and Pitchfork, calling his music “triumphantly in the present” in its Best 200 Albums of the 2010's list. 

Mergia's new album "Yene Mircha" ("My Choice" in Amharic) encapsulates many of the things that make the keyboardist, accordionist and composer-arranger remarkable—elements that have persisted to maintain his vitality all these years, through the ebb and flow of his career. The rock solid trio with whom he has toured the world most recently, DC-based Alemseged Kebede (bass) and Ken Joseph (drums), forms the nucleus around which an expanded band makes a potent response to the contemporary jazz future "Lala Belu" promised. "Yene Mircha" calcifies Mergia's prolific stream of creativity and his philosophy that there is a multitude of Ethiopian musical approaches, not just one sound. 

Enlisting the help of master mesenqo (traditional stringed instrument) player Setegn Atenaw, celebrated vocalist Tsehay Kassa and legendary saxophone player Moges Habte from his 70s outfit Walias Band, Mergia enhances his bright, electric band on this recording with an expanded line up on some songs. Mergia produced the album which features several of his original compositions along with songs by Asnakesh Worku and Teddy Afro. An artist still reinventing his sound every night on stage during his marathon live sets, this 74-year-old icon refuses to make the same album twice. His creative process in the studio—starting with the core band, then after listening extensively over weeks and months adding more sounds and instruments—is as urgent and risky as his concerts can be, pushing the band to the outer limits of group improvisation and back with chord extensions during his exploratory solos. "Yene Mircha" captures this live experience and fosters an expansive view of what else could be in store for this tireless practitioner of Ethiopian music.

Tabansi Studio Band – Wakar Alhazai Kano & Mus’En Sofua: four incredible slices of almost- undiscovered late-70s/early 80s Afrobeat magic, but not Fela’s Yoruba/Pidgin Afrobeat.

This is Igbo and Hausa Afrobeat- two very different and rarely heard styles. For the first time anywhere, BBE is proud to reissue back to back two LPs that are so elusive that many Afro heads doubted their very existence until now.

The beats are laid down by the seven legendary Martins Brothers – of ‘Money’ fame- whilst vocals are courtesy of a multi-lingual Igbo legend, Prof. Goddy Ezike, one of the most extraordinary voices out of Africa, up there with Youssou N’Dour and Salif Keita, whose half- century career has, like fine wine, simply improved his voice.

Wakar Alhazai Kano and Lokoci Azumi Ta Wuca (tracks 1 and 2) draw on Northern Hausa music, with its Islamic inflections and skipping 12/8 time signatures more typical of the string and wind-based instrumentation of Kano and the broader sub-Saharan musical palette.

Kama Sofos and Aka Ji Ego Ga Anu Nwam (tracks 3 and 4) are sung in Igbo, with all the percussive wonders that Igbo culture has to offer, filtered through a jazzy Afrobeat improvisational spectrum.

Rêves sonores, a collaboration between Montreal-based sound artists Nick Schofield and Stefan Christoff, presents their newest single and accompanying visual piece, Mondial. Anthemic in presentation and radical in conception, Mondial is the second single from the duo’s forthcoming album Crépuscule. The piece typifies Rêves sonores’ bricolage approach to composition and commitment to fine-tuned sound design.

Mondial stems from a 2015 saxophone warm up recorded in New York City on a cold February morning - clipped, sampled, looped, and pitched into a warm resonant mantra. Over the following years, Schofield would take the saxophone sequence to a number of editing sessions, later applying violin accompaniment in Montreal and additional synthesizers at Alberta’s Banff Centre. He obsessed over Mondial’s sound design, continually stepping in and out of details, revisiting and revising his work with great patience. As the song took shape, Schofield visualized grand imagery of Earth: blues and greens spinning and cascading into an endless sea of space. Over its development, Mondial began to assume a grand, otherworldly significance to Schofield.

“The song feels ‘worldwide,’ like my own anthem for the Earth.”

Unfortunately, much of Schofield’s meticulous editing work would later come crashing back to Earth before Mondial could be realized. In a sick twist of cosmic fate, the song’s audio session was accidentally deleted the night before he had planned to complete the mix. Schofield was able to salvage his efforts by re-tooling the remaining audio materials from the original session; however, both the composition and its composer had to accept that every work of art has its own unique orbit to follow upon its path to completion.

Schofield adopted this go-with-the-flow ethos in filming the music video for Mondial. Filmed at the Banff Centre, he challenged himself with executing, and spotlighting, his own interpretive dance - his first time attempting anything in this realm.

“I had to keep my drumsticks in hand to make me feel comfortable enough to move freely in front of the camera. In the end, the chopped dance gestures match the loops of the song, aligning the body movements with the musical arch. A dear friend, Max Farrell, then processed the video with a rig of analogue effects like feedback, delay and saturators. The analogue effects help the footage transcend, adding an aura of surreal imagination.”

Mondial is the second single from the forthcoming Rêves sonores album, Crépuscule, and is available across all digital platforms. Crépuscule will be released in April 2021 on digital and physical formats.
