Next up our Origins Tapes series is musician, producer, DJ and label owner Priori who is best known for their beautiful cross-over tracks and mixes and their label NAFF that they run with fellow artist Ex-Terrestial. 

Based and born Quebec and currently based in Montréal , Priori represents the Canadian dance music scene worldwide through both their individual output and their label’s. They have also become known for their technical ability in the studio which has led to them mixing projects for fellow artists such as Rosa Terence, Ex-terrestrial and Gene Tellem.

Priori’s hypnotic soundscapes have meant that they have the ability to create worlds around their audience with both their live shows, live DJ sets and online mixes and we are excited to be welcoming them for our Origins Tapes series.

As co-founder of the incredible Melbourne Deepcast, the mix series royalty has spent over a decade filling our living rooms with quality mixes by global powerhouses and, perhaps more important, introducing us to exciting new talent, as well as giving interesting insights in their latest adventures. With restrictions just lifted in Melbourne, we caught up to hear about his summer plans, among other things. And Myles, we salute you for your tireless work mate, keep them coming!

Here we go with Awk Cast no. 45, with a mix that aptly reminds us that the time has come to dust off your dancing shoes and embrace spring in the long missed comfort of a sweaty club. Amsterdam native and Berlin based artist @murieldb does brilliantly in telling us just that with this stunning effort, smoothly taking the reigns over our series with her dubbed out and playful selections. Lots of influences come together in these 90 minutes that are eclectic and colourful to fully engage all our senses while similarly relaxed and cool enough to want us keep on grooving forever.

One half of French duo Nummer, Emmanuel Corre has recently begun a new chapter in his musical career under the moniker of E-Talking. Inaugurating that new path, his debut instalment as E-Talking came through the high-flying Blue Series of London's finest, AD93.

Mapping his own route at large from normative barricades, the E-Talking project has been gathering momentum with some choice contributions to the catalogues of imprints as varied as Early Reflex, Nerv, Nasty Enterprises and Chanoirs. In the
wake of his acclaimed two-year residency on Rinse France and in parallel to regular
appearances on HÖR, Emmanuel’s line of action is just about to reveal in all its
glorious scope and scale, so better keep your ear to the ground.

For this mix, he slices up tracks like Zizou did defenses in 1998 by travelling through trancey breaks to deeper, techno:esque sounds with a hint of nuggety, tech-house delights. Perfect way to end the year; Merci Beacoup 2022, Allez y voici 2023!

About the mix:

"I had toured for the first time in Australia late 2018 and it made a massive impression on me. In many ways, it reminded me of a warmer version of Canada. People were incredibly kind and welcoming and I was blown away by the hospitality the promoters and local artists showed me. I also absolutely adored the incredible nature I saw in Australia, having played in Hobart and Brisbane and Melbourne and Sydney and Adelaide and Hopkins’ Creek Festival in a volcanic crater, I fell in love with the landscapes I saw and the animals local only to this part of the world. So when I first sat down to think about this mix, the bushfires had just started raging and the news was beyond depressing to see. Everywhere I saw online was just videos and pictures of burned animals and ash that was once blooming flora & fauna. A fan from Australia sent me a DM on IG, telling me how my song “Terracotta”, as it’s a track that talks about the sea and land, was able to give them a lot of peace during a time that was anything but.

And so I decided I wanted to make a mix that not only paid tribute to this incredible music scene and country and its amazing artists, but was musically able to provide a sense of solace to people who perhaps feel hopeless about our time on this planet. That is partly why I began the mix with music by indigenous tribes from East Timor—as “modern” people it’s sad to see that we’ve lost touch with the roots of our life on this planet as we know it, and I think we have so much to learn from indigenous cultures and their respect for mother nature. I also chose a lot of dub music, and music that featured lots of organic drums for similar reasons, as these styles of music owe as much to indigenous folk music as they do to modern electronic music. Ultimately I wanted the mix to feel like slipping into a warm bath. Hope it was successful. 🙂"

@myles-mac is perhaps best known as co-founder and curator of trusted electronic music platform and mix series @melbourne-deepcast, but his list of credentials stretches much longer than that. A fixture of Melbourne’s underground for the past decade, Myles has cemented his reputation as a respected DJ and curator through both Melbourne Deepcast and his famed Lost Weekend club nights. His eclectic and diverse selections - both as an individual DJ and as one half of the 90s house duo Project 95 (@proj95) - have meanwhile earned him space on lineups across Australia and overseas. 

While Myles, like many of us, has found a sense of calm in downtempo and ambient music the last few months, in his Patterns of Perception 75 he switches gears. Here, Myles seamlessly fuses some of his favourite fast, spacey techno and energised broken rhythms with moments of pure, atmospheric euphoria. The resulting hour and a half feels like a triumphant return to the club: offering both a brief escape from our current moment and a much needed reminder of the energy that can only be created by a dance floor in full flow.
