This compilation by non-binary, trans, and female artists anoints a ritual through its very release, at its heart a queer cross-section of sound. It’s character is neither boxed nor defined, it explores the sonic in electronic form outside convention in genre. It oozes out from fixtures and settles at an irreducible essence, while constituted by disparate strands of voice and identity. The soaring scratch inherent to Plum , clu unfurls a portal of sound-waves, carrying the listener somewhere beyond time. Though its practice, in collective creation, as archaic as prehistory. The album is a celebration in itself, the tracks free to exist together. Each one both intimately and eerily coalesces one’s senses, extraterrestrial in its notes. Not a prototype, but alive in its becoming as it meets the listener.

'Shipping Container' is the 1st track on the new MAGAS 12", 'Explanatory Denial' out May 26th, 2017.

Explanatory Denial is the 7th record by Chicago-based electronic producer Jim Magas under his longtime MAGAS monicker. In the ‘90s, he fronted unconventional ‘no wave’-ish bands Couch and Lake Of Dracula. In the early 2000s, he recorded for material for Ersatz Audio and did a few remixes. In the Twenty-teens, he focused on instrumental productions for his own Midwich imprint and composing music for director Asia Argento’s 2014 film, Misunderstood. In early 2017, Magas premiered new material during a U.S. tour in support of band Joan of Arc.

The limited-to-200 4-track spring 2017 12" EP Explanatory Denial opens with ‘Shipping Container’, a rough, minimal stomper, offering plenty of bounce, but no padding or instructions.‘New Dawn’ opens the door to a brightly-lit and concrete alternate reality. ‘Sky Castles’ keeps bodies moving while synthesized strings whisper false reassurances of easy days and high pay. ‘Indelible Mark’ is an atmospheric lo-fi Casio lounge-funk spy groover that smells of Holiday Inn wood-paneling, dripping with Benson & Hedges Ultra-lite 100s. Deploying a variety of primitive electronic techniques, Explanatory Denial is a testament to the power of diligent synth-hunting and decades of basement refinement.

Explantory Denial is the first entry into Midwich Red, a series of no-frills, minimally-packaged, club-friendly, limited edition 12”s.

‘Prince of Grunge’ is a grueling testimony of a generational affliction consisting of millennial anxiety, depression and fear experienced first hand by the Porto-born, London-based producer. The complexity and contradictory nature of these emotions and mental states result in a vulnerable narrative highlighting the difficulties that comes with positive progress.

The album opens with ‘Born’, a short gripping introduction needing little explanation with the shrill cry of a newborn marking the birth and re-birth of the artist and his latest work.

‘Until I Die’’s ascending vocals commence the voyage of trepidation inquisitively. Stepping shyly away from and over the hope shimmering through the cracks on his trail, ultimately avoiding acceptance.

Lead single ‘Prince of Grunge’ reflects on the chaos of a missed youth and it’s trials and tribulations. As it builds ominously the track breaks sporadically, again, with moments of hope, which are quickly expelled by an overwhelming sense of doom. ‘V’ ruptures with anger and self-mutilates, repeating the pandemonium.

‘I Don’t Know’ is the suffocating numbness of heartache in the club, desperate to be set free from emotion. A concoction of sexual desire, loneliness and anger we are asked “What is your ultimate fantasy?” only to be told “I am Lost”. Closing the mini-album, ‘Fantasy’ is filled with hope and determination to find peace of mind.

In 2016, DJ, producer and member of Genome 6.66MBP Tess Sun, aka Hyph11e, began work on her debut EP.

Living a double life as a composer for TV by day, and DJing around Shanghai by night, the passing of time often stifled and spurred on her production process. After having a dream of a Vanishing Cinema, a place where memories disappear in front of your eyes through the passage of time, Hyph11e quit her day job to focus on her own music full-time. The result is four original, uncompromising tracks that owe as much to vintage noise and industrial music as they do to field recordings and contemporary club music.

On the remixes, Tzusing tweaks and tunes “Black Pepper”, driving it into idiosyncratically ominous territory; M.E.S.H. rebuilds “Unknown Number” from the ground up until it reaches the clouds; while Kid Antoine takes “Escapism”s warning sirens and cuts them into playful, bouncing cascades.
