After the conferences come the holidays.

Academics always look forward to the holidays.
They mark their calendars.
They count the days.

Finally—a chance to get some real work done.

No students.
No admin.
Just pure, blissful research.

It never works out that way.

Families expect visits.
Or worse:
relaxation.

Visiting home is its own kind of reckoning—
a reminder of how far you’ve moved
from where you started.

During her visit, Kate’s mother asks, right on schedule:
“So when do you finish school, dear?”

Kate tries:
“Mum, I’m an associate professor.”

“So... you’re a teacher then?”

“Sometimes. Mostly research.”

“Oh. Research for your thesis?”

Kate gives up somewhere around the second glass of wine.

The first band meeting after the holidays
is for licking wounds.
Ava doesn’t say much.
But when pressed, offers:
“Back home, people don’t understand
what I’m doing with my life.”

None of it is cruel.
Just distant.

Just a little lonely.

Somewhere in all the clinking cutlery
and misunderstood answers,
they each feel it—

That quiet, untouchable thing.
