London Grammar - Nightcall (LG re-edit)

The history behind “That’s what friends are for”:

Because of several happenings lately within the families of our friends and collegues, John wanted to make an uplifting piece of music to give some releave and support to them all. 
John already had a simple melody on the shelf since 2004, he already called “That’s what Friends are for”, and it was intended to become a sort lullaby.
Because of a discussion between him and Megan on this subject, they wanted to try to do something on John's rough mix / idea, but because of John’s weird “chord structure” nobody could play (as with a lot of his creations), it was impossible to figure out how it should be played, so for the time being they left it at that.
As Matt Baker was suppose to come over from Liverpool a few days ahead, (to work with John in the studio, and to get better known with eachothers way of working, and creating new ideas / songs), Megan said she preferred to wait what Matt could explain to her about John's (weird) chord structure..

When Matt actually set next to John working in the studio, they decided to pick up this melody themselves first, and start making it into a complete song with harmonies and let it end with an orchestral movement.

While they were already working (lately) on a project called “The Frysk”, they obviously were very much influenced by that, and trying to create the proper harmonies, all of a certain this piece changed into a sort of “Hymn / Anthem for the Frysk”, which now can be used for that documentary as well.

As stated before it happens a lot, you start with an idea, and while you’re creating more tracks and  harmonies for a song, the whole idea starts to go somewhere else, well that happened with this song as well.
From the moment John and Matt started working together, each of their creations end up in completely new ideas / songs, so they had to come together in the studio, (in Liverpool or in Amsterdam), and at the moment they did, so many ideas came out and they didn’t have time enough to work them all out, however now it’s a lot easier for them to do so even if they work separately in different cities.
Especially Matt now knows what weird accords John is using, which he couldn’t explain to anybody what they were, in a way you can say now that a new composer duo is established, and for sure they’ll start creating brand new songs / ideas very soon.

As a result this piece may be released into 2 or 3 different versions at a later date.
For now we like to leave the original idea for this song and the Hymn as One, to let you hear how a song can chance and end up to be while we’re working on it, we hope you’ll enjoy it just as much as we did making it.

A little feedback on (our imaginary idea) of the Hymn / Anthem for “The Frysk Empire”:

As the legend goes, King Mallna (Magna) had a vision that predicted ending of all Frysk tribal wars with a “Treaty at the Mountain of Kings” where the Frysk later established their capitol Köningsborg (nowadays Kalinigrad), the city would be destroyed and build up again after all the wars the city had to endure, eventually the Prussians would build up their capitol Köningberg at the same spot.

Hi there and welcome to our new track 'The Giants Lair'.

I got the idea for this track whilst John & I worked together in Holland, but I wasn't sure what is was going to be about. 

Whilst working on the track we got an idea for our very own fairy tale, 'The Giants Lair'.

Our story goes like this............

Once upon a time a witch was venturing in a dark wood collecting secret ingredients for her potions, when she was captured by a giant. She struggled to break free, but failed, so offered the Giant a deal he couldn't refuse. If he would set her free she'd grant him a very special spell. 

He had wished for years that a beautiful maiden would fall in love with him. So he agreed to set the witch free and used the spell to bewitch a young princess. The kingdom where she lived fell into chaos, as the princess had been in love with a young prince, who had planned to ask her for her hand in marriage, when the spell took hold.

No one was able to stop her and she left the kingdom and started her journey across the land to join her new 'true love' the Giant King. The Prince vowed to the king that he would stop this terrible union even if it cost him his own life. He set off on a perilous adventure to capture the witch and take her to the giants lair and reverse the spell.

Will he make it..................?

This is now a 2nd mix of the track as we have added some additional string harmonies to add extra texture towards the end.

Matt Baker & John Styles - The Giants Lair

We proudly present the pre-release of our first single “Be as One”, the next weeks we will do the finishing touches to make it perfect, but for now we would really like to know what you think, and maybe you can give us some advices as well.

I came up with this song while I was asked to make some music for a commercial, and while I was making different versions, I thought we as band could even combine them into a song in a bit more Chill Out / Funky Progressive Rock kind of style.

The real title is "We should all BE as ONE to fight hunger, pain and grief" but that would be to long for a title, but that's what I meant to say. 

Because of the latest news, and the subjects on talk shows lately, I was shocked, while so many things happens in the world, they seem to bother and make such a fuss about so many (little) things, and they seem to forget the real problems our world is facing lately. 
I've asked myself, WHY can't we first take care of the real problems, and try to help each other instead of using up all the time complaining about NOTHING (peanuts things), are we NUTS??
We should BE as ONE to fight the REAL problems in the world, and help each other first.

Now the (technical) music side of this piece:
As I already noticed, a lot of people are wondering John and Hip-Hop or Funk??? 
Well as most of my friends know, I like to experiment with all music styles, and try to merge my orchestral sounds with any styles, especially when people tell me it can't be done, we’re all on it immediately.
In this piece we've tried combine / merge many music styles and instruments, and tried to see what instruments could be used.
I believe with all styles of music, an orchestra can do it too with some adjustments, and that's exactly what I am trying to accomplish with this song too. 
Then I’ve asked all members of Euphoriqa to join in, and do their own part with their talents, unfortunately Hemmo still can’t join us, so I’ve asked Andreas Hoffmann to help us with his great talents to play the solo guitars, which I think he did just splendidly.
Many of you already know, that we’ll continue till we’re completely satisfied with it, that’s why we’ll need a few more sessions for the final CD / single release.

When Matt send me his first raw idea of this song, I knew immediately that this song had a double meaning for me, as always he allowed me to start building up the song and make arrangements for us to continue, only this time I wanted to do it differently, so I asked him to make a piano and a guitar track with exactly the same feeling within it as his first idea for this piece, and when he send them, I started building around those 2 tracks, for some weird reason his 2 tracks were exactly what I needed to express myself towards all people who supported me and my family so much after I suffered from a stroke 3 weeks ago.
I am slowly recovering, although things have changed dramatically, I wanted to go back making music as soon as possible to get things out of my system, and maybe help and comfort others at the same time.

Why this piece is build up the way it is, and what it means for me:

Part 1: The moment I found myself laying at intensive care, and everything go so slowly around me, and nothing seems to get within me anymore, you’re only connected to the machine to monitor you all the time.
You can’t do the things anymore you wish to do so much, and only resting and relaxing is required.
You try to assure your loved ones that everything is OK now, but they saw the difference on me, which I didn’t realize myself yet, but I didn’t have the power to worry about that at all.  

Part 2: After I came home I couldn’t do so many things, I couldn’t sit up long, only walking and laying down was OK for me, plus I moved along so slowly, and couldn’t talk to express myself the way I wanted.
I got scared I wouldn’t be able to make music the way I wanted, so I tried playing around a bit, and asked Matt to send me a completely new piece we were suppose to make for the docu “The Frysk” anyway, I needed to test myself if I was still able to do exactly the same as I could before, or even better.

Part 3: Although I was struggling with my tiredness, and things didn’t want to go as I had it in my head, the moment I put those tracks into my machine, I just listened many times and finally became calm, the song evolved in my head as a symphony, so slowly I inserted track for track like a jigsaw puzzle.
The song became longer, and the more I worked the more emotions came out, which somehow also relaxed me as well, when creating music touches me so deeply, that’s the proof for myself I go the right way.

Part 4: Realising how lucky I was, it obviously wasn’t my time yet, and although the title of this song may apply something different, I am still alive, and it did make me think differently about my life and the things I worried about so much lately, I know I can’t change it, the situation forced me to adjust and go back to my own self and my roots, and because I have to back down now, I also learned have to enjoy and appreciate much more the things I have, and the talents given to me to express myself in music to help others too.
I’ve also learned I can’t take all the problems on my shoulders, and what my own limits are, and exactly that gave me the space within my soul and mind to hear the beauty of Matt’s raw composition, which made me hear a full orchestra play it, now it was my “quest” to create that “Orchestral sound” 

Part 5: The final part became an Epic Crescendo, and is the conquering feeling I experienced when the first take of this song took shape, and finally after 3 days work I had conquered my fear, I knew I didn’t loose the touch, and at the same time I could feel the intense power of this piece which was in my head from the start, and being able to get it all out and creating this orchestral sound was like a therapy for me.
Please don’t take me wrong, I know I am not fully cured, and I still have to take medicines for the rest of my life, but I know that the will to fight back, gave me some of the power to do what I love to do most, and for that I am very grateful to my family and friends for their support, patience and believe in me.
It may still takes a lot of time to recover fully, but slowly I get back and getting stronger each day.

For everybody in the world, if this has happened to one of your loved ones or friends too, please be patient with them, allow them to do things in their own pace, that’s the most important thing, we don’t need your pity, treat us the way you’ve always done before, only things will go a bit slower, and although everybody experience this differently, if possible we just need to recover, and that takes time and acceptance.
Allow them to talk out and share their emotions with you, they need your shoulders to cry on, more then your advice, allow them to empty their pain and sorrows first until their strong enough to fight themselves.
In my case, I am lucky that I have creating music as therapy, and great friends like Matt allowing me to work with them on their compositions, and give me total free hand to do with it what I think it needs.
I sincerely hope that many people can find the same comfort and relaxation I got creating it, and listening to this piece does relax me very much too.

I also want to thank everybody for their warm words of support towards me and my family.
