this will be my last public release in a while. i have been very addicted to work and have been sleeping very late the past few weeks. burnout is also getting to me from having no sense of direction, so i will not be posting in a month.

anyways,

if you haven't caught on already, i have been dipping my toes into umamusume pretty derby. that gacha game/ anime series with anthropomorphized horse girls. i found out about it around a month ago when the global release of the gacha game released. it gained traction very quickly upon release and was picked up by big gaming streamers.

personally i found out through my friends playing the game (one who doesn't typically even enjoy anime, let alone gacha games, which surprised me). i passively played the game and thought it was pretty neat. i liked the characters; i knew of the "communal daughter" haru urara, redeemed tokai teio with my ssr voucher for her title [peak joy], i got lucky and pulled a 3-star oguri cap who is my favorite uma to date! ^_^ with super creek and silence suzuka close behind.

what i didn't think i would get into was the irl history of the horses themselves. though only passively gaining information from yt shorts (with all kinds of misinformation, but i managed to figure out which was real and which wasn't), i started having genuine interest in the actual horses, their jockeys, their groomers... and how much their lives, their achievements, and their failures have impacted japanese peoples' lives. the supplementary media engages the viewer so well with its drama and character-focused-stories, which not only kept me guessing, but got me more invested into the series as well. i've only watched season 1 of the anime but i hope that season 2 blows me away (aside from the admittedly lifeless mixed cgi animation). s2 ep1 seems to be setting up amazing things for future arcs.

i was upset knowing about grass wonder, who was an american-born stallion that passed away from old age and organ failure (on the 8th of aug 2025, at 30 y/o). a lot of people (incl. uma fans) were mourning his passing. i didn't know much about the horse but i understood his impact in his 4-year-long racing career, and figured i could write a piano piece as a tribute. grass wonder in the umamusume anime is known to be a soft-spoken, yet aggressively competitive runner of team sirius, and notably one of special week's rivals (which afaik is true irl as well). she notably sings chatsumi in a yt short - a japanese folk song from 1912 (with an unknown composer), so i used it towards the end of the song and reharmonized it with a pop progression. i haven't fully verified if it is actually playable or not and only written initially impossible hand movements and key presses, so please do inform me if there are any weird movements that will be removed in rearranging this song for an 88-key piano.

it's certainly not my best song up to date, but i think it's a good enough sendoff to the legendary grass wonder. a goodbye to an era. forever living in horse racing lovers' hearts, and immortalized with umamusume.

as much as both things are designed to make our money (and as much as i don't like the typical anime culture surrounding umamusume)... i think even in the most unexpected pieces of media or recreational activities are we able to find meaning and fundamental values that we all can potentially live by.
