There can be many reasons for forming a band. Perhaps it is the desire to find a common language. One that can be more intimate, more poetic, more precise, or more vague. One that evolves, just like those who speak it. Shaped by encounters, always becoming. In the case of the Zurich-based four-piece band District Five and its members Vojko Huter, Paul Amereller, Tapiwa Svosve, and Xaver Rüegg, this proves to be true: the multi-instrumentalists have been meeting in the rehearsal room and beyond for over ten years, reflecting on themselves, their friendship, their influences, and experiences in their music. The result is a work that keeps on moving. Sometimes closer to jazz, sometimes pop, sometimes further away from it, but always close to itself. The band gives the friends the ability to act, which could also be described as agency: to reflect on and shape the thing we call life.

i’m interested in the synergetic exchange of experience and in processes dealing with improvisation, listening, nature and philosophical/social/political questions; implementing the interaction with space(s), using synthetic and acoustic sound sources and field recordings.

Paul Amereller (born 1991) is a Swiss musician living in Zurich. He is exploring substances for improvisation and rhythm sound. At the age of four began playing the drums. Later, Paul was taught Swing/Black American music by his mentors K.T Geier and Peter Frei. 

Paul holds a master degree in music from which he graduated in 2016. During music university (ZHdK) he studied drums with Tony Renold, Dominik Burkhalter, Chris Wisendanger and Ziv Ravitz. 

He is working as a co-leader with District Five and Kush K. Both bands have played international tours and released various albums on different Labels. He also won the "ZKB Jazz Preis in 2017" with District Five and "Album of the Year 2020" with Kush K. 
He has collaborated with Colin Valon, Ganesh Geymeier, Patrice Moret, Flo Götte, Evelinn Trouble, Marc Méan and Catia Lanfranchi.

The Gamut Kollektiv stands for research, the unfinished, pieces in motion, progress; it is a breeding ground for ideas, experiments and processes.
