[COMPILATION] The Very Best of AYRA Recordings

The forthcoming release of our AYRA label is a special one as this is the way I like breakbeat sound in 2021: it's a modern crossover between breaks, progressive and psy trance, and - although I am very picky - I can easily imagine this track in every dj set of Beatman & Ludmilla.

The release got the best design ever created by my sister Lizarb, and I'm seriously glad to have her on board all of those years. 
Some days ago I just looked back on her designs she made for the label and wow: she just gave AYRA a unique and signature vibe. Really-really proud of her.

When I decided to hook-up some Psy-Trance Remix for the original, I pick Evan Gamble Lewis without a question (his Spoiler remix for Hyper is just the best psytrance remix I heard for a long time) as I think he is the most forward-thinking producer these days, he is mixing his breakbeat roots with ultra sharp psy sounds. Exactly how I like.

At last, I'm especially glad to work with those super talented people. If you have some time, check out those proper underground tracks which are really made by passion.

Emotional, Driving, uncompromising are all words to describe the latest (and probably greatest) album to leave the Hyper studio, ‘Lies’. Known for big production, a liberal use of live bass, guitars and uncompromising vocals, the last decade has seen Hyper go from tearing up clubs and festivals all over the world to scoring tracks for Hollywood trailers, TV and video games as well as remixing for some of the worlds biggest artists.

 

Two and a half years have passed since Hatfields last outing under his Hyper moniker (the award winning cowrite ‘Lights’ with Beatman & Ludmilla) and those years have not been easy ones…

 

This, however, does not mean the album is introspective or self indulgent. Far from it!  Personal difficulties have ensured that ‘Lies’ has pushed the Hyper sound to new levels and helped Hatfield find a new focus for his material.  From album opener ‘Clockwork’, which drifts from ethereal intro and metronomic ticking clock into a full force, relentless techno inspired, distortion filled juggernaut of a track to the epic, contemplative orchestral maneuverings of  ‘Take Me Away’, this album is an outpouring of heart and soul.

Once again, the album features a raft of talented vocalists.  LA based Neil Ormandy adds depth and soul to the Hyper stylings of ‘Out Of Time’ and ‘Take Me Away’ and an almost Trent Rezner-esque energy to ‘Controllin’ Me’.  NY rapper Shirt spits venom over the energetic punk electronica of ‘Live Forever’ while Robert Shields adds a stunning top line for the albums most commercial track by far, ‘Heartbeats’. The album also sees Hyper successfully team up again with Beatman & Ludmilla for standout dancefloor cut, 'Breed', which has been wowing festival crowds when road tested over the summer!

 

‘Lies’ is already making it’s mark where the Hyper sound always has… To picture. The title track has just been broadcast on the final season of CSI:NY ,‘Live Forever’ features on the new Need For Speed game, ‘Clockwork’ on the forthcoming ‘Gran Tourismo’ release and  ‘Take Me Away’ has been requested for use on the trailer to massive new Fox US TV show ‘Almost Human’ by JJ Abrahams and Bad Robot (Star Trek)…

 

To top this off, the completion of ‘Lies’ and the direction of some of his other work has inspired a follow up album. This will see 8 of the 10 tracks reinterpreted with orchestration.  Picking out sound design, String and key feature elements of the album tracks, collaborator and composer Chris White has teamed up with Hatfield to ‘Remix’ them in an entirely new and innovative way adding beauty and even more depth to the material.  ‘Symphony Of Lies’ will surface in early 2014..

Hyper’s 7th studio album is incoming and has all of the depth and diversity you might expect from an Electronic music producer who’s never been afraid to swim against the tide. Having initially shot to prominence when the Breakbeat scene was at the cutting edge, Hatfield has performed at the biggest clubs and festivals the world over (Glastonbury, Fuji Rock, Roskilde, Sziget and Exit to name just a few) as either a DJ or as part of his live act.

Having taken a short break to concentrate on other projects, Hatfield threw his hat back into the ring late last year when called upon by Sony’s Bullet Height to remix their ‘Hold Together’ single. This industrial electronic juggernaut was received very well critically and led to radio support from XFM and saw him upping the tempo for the subsequent remix of Losers’ ‘This Is A War’. Although this remix was crafted for the dancefloor with old school breaks and a heavy rave dynamic, the epic vocal, piano and strings saw the radio love spread even further.

Cut to now and the playfully titled ‘The Adventures Of The Android Kid’ is about to add a huge splash of colour to the Hyper catalogue. Club bangers happily nestle alongside Grunge Techno (fans of ‘Spoiler’ and ‘Clockwork’ will not be dissapointed) and edgy pop for the discerning ear; whilst Hypers trademark punchy, edit heavy sound can still be found in tracks such as ‘Power Of One’ and ‘Its A Trap’. Strings also become an integral part of the sound for the first time since ‘Symphony..’ and show once again why pigeonholing this artist is something you do at your own peril.

As usual the album takes in a few collaborations along the way. Hyper teams up with Davip (Noisia’s Vision label) for album opener ‘Android Kid’, an explosive, genre jumping, monster of a track brimming with punk attitude which is already being lauded by Ram Records’ Hamilton and The Glitch Mob.
. Also, following on from the success of the Bullet Height remix and a mutual respect for one anothers work the two artists joined forces for ‘We Are The Revolution’. A quiet/loud affair of epic proportions (inspired in part by Hatfields time spent in Seattle over the past year), ‘WATR’ bridges the rock/Electronica gap effortlessly and blurs boundaries with haunting piano melodies, ethereal vocals and distopian overtones.

The album also features the by-now-obligatory killer club collaboration with Ayra label bosses Beatman & Ludmilla in the form of ‘Hold The Line’, a featured vocal on Hypers poppiest track to date ('Games’) from I am X’s Sammi Doll and the soon-to-be-famous Robert Shields weighs in for good measure on ‘Playing With Fire'. ‘Adventures..’ even boasts a beautiful yet dark acoustic guitar based ballad ‘Bleed' (which was actually recorded in Hatfields spare room). Strings, sound design and respectful splashes of analogue synths have been added to this spectacle co written with long time Hyper collaborator Neil Ormandy (co-writer of the massive James Arthur UK No.1 hit single, ’Say You Won’t Let Go’..).

Broken up into 2 parts both to arrive in 2017, Hypers most accomplished album to date will be turning a few heads, thats for sure…

Magnus is a bridge between trance and psytrance. As a crossover artist, Magnus blends the driving and heavy elements of psy with uplifting and melodic trance. Born and raised in the US, Magnus has called Seattle home since 2000. His career began in 2002 and has steadily grown with releases on many notable labels. In 2016, his collaboration Evoke with Simon Patterson became one of the most notable tracks of the year. In early 2017, Magnus became the head of A&R for the Perfecto Fluoro label under Paul Oakenfold.
