IDASA is closing its doors. It first formed in 1987 as the Institute for a Democratic Alternative in South Africa. After the 1994 elections they shifted focus to building democratic societies. They are now known as the Institute for Democracy in Africa. The North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria plans to hear an application on April 2 for its winding up, which is expected to go ahead unless "substantial immediate additional financial support is forthcoming". This, as the organisation has tried to reshape itself in a changing socio-political and economic times.
