what this song meant in 2004  (now means something totally different to me in the post ukraine invasion era)

N Squared (aka Cold War Girl) is a silly love-sick song partly about the Soviet Union's paradoxical concept of empowering women by putting them in life-threatening situations (as fighter pilots,
cosmonaughts, spies and biologlical weapons scientists.)

Deputy Commander Irina Rakabolskaya tells how the first slogan of the regiment was, "You are a woman and you should be proud of that." She goes on to relate how her good friend Yevgeniya Rudneva, who was awarded the Gold Star (Hero of the Soviet Union) posthumously, was an astronomer and a poet and was also fond of fairy tales.

"When we were not on missions, she would gather us all together at the airfield and recite fairy tales by Zhukovsky. When she was burning, in the air over Kerch, I was standing at the aerodrome watching it. I was losing my friend, she was burning away over my head, and I could do nothing to save her."

Then it's also about the legacy of that "sacrifice=heroic" mentallity which has produced sports champions who at 15 dominate the game but then have a mid life crisis at age of 18.

Both N Squared and Soviet Reunion are indirectly related to the 80's nostalgia because all I ever
heard in the 80's was that the Russians were going to kill everyone and being a little kid I'd have nightmares about it because it scared the shit
out of me

I guess in these songs I'm coming to terms with the paradox that as I got older I'd find myself dreaming about east european tennis players so the contrast is completely dramatic and absurd.

Reagan should have shut the hell up about nuclear destruction because a much greater threat was being created... the soviet union's arsenal of really f***ing good looking tennis players. Hah! It's just amazing how misleading the propaganda was.

All of the audio in this video was generated by creating feedback paths in a Inkel mx880e mixer, compressed with a pair of Flatline compressors and recorded to tape using a Goodmans gsw-5200 tape deck. No computer used.

How not to make music part 2

Part of the Legacy Tapes series.

In this track i used a Yamaha Pss-780, a Korg poly-800, a Korg MS10, a Yamaha QX-5 sequencer, an Inkel mixer and an Akai HX-M11 tape recorder. All equipment dates from 1991 or earlier.

A modern computer was used to emulate an Atari ST running PSSED to edit sounds in the Pss780.
