I bought a new Mac, and then between Catalina and weird hardware problems (I had to swap the laptop out twice…) it took over two months to get everything set up and work on music again. And I still have a few songs I can't play because they use soft synths or effects that don't run on Catalina. But I'm mostly back now.

I mostly make synthpop, mostly.

Slapped-together demos; criticism (constructive, or even "this one sucks") very welcome.

I'm obviously using "synthpop" pretty broadly. But I don't want to pick a narrower genre. (Someone told me most of my music is "hard acid synthi", but I don't think anyone else does that genre, so… that just means I'm the best at it, right?) Nothing against people who make darkynth or futurepop or minimal or whatever (as you can tell from who I follow). Making music is all about setting up limits to push against, and an established genre is a great way to do that, but it's not what I want to do with this project. I want to range all the way from OMD to Apparat to the Screamers, and if I occasionally go outside the lines and accidentally sound like a movie soundtrack or early Front Line Assembly or even Scooter, that's fine. But it does mean that if you like one of my songs, you'll probably hate the next one—but skip around a bit and you might find another one you like better.

Except the the vocals and samples, this is 100% softsynths (and occasional custom software). I'm old enough that I used the real hardware when it was… well, OK, not new, but cheap at your friendly local pawnshop. I have no desire to go back to the days of converting between different brands of CV, programming a stepper without any visible feedback, waiting for the Minimoog to warm up (but not enough to overheat), and sitting around for 90 seconds while patches load.

Painted Invisible started as a side project in 2004 for music I made on the commute to and from work. But for over a decade, it's been the only project I work on. The name comes from a drug store somewhere in the Outer Mission district of SF. They had a bin full of clear nail polish in the middle of the cosmetics section, on sale super-cheap, with a sign saying ¡Invisible Paint!
