I grew up in an environment that was very risk-averse. Even my mother, who started her own business in her mid-40s, was rather fearful when it came to us children. Of course, that rubbed off on us. 

However, I believe that you can only live a great life if you dare to do something, if you take risks, start something new, and step outside your comfort zone. That’s exactly what inspired me to write this song.

Under the Botany moniker, Spencer Stephenson creates rich psychological and emotional experiences through audio. When he started creating his own music at age 15, he was enamored with Four Tet, Stars of the Lid, Madlib, and Dilla. In his late teens, he went through a heavy period of discovery with Psychedelic rock, Krautrock, and Brit-folk. "I started imitating a lot of those forms in my own music, sampling them sometimes, recording from scratch sometimes, but really just trying to bridge a gap between those worlds and sample-based hip hop, and I’m still trying."

On his latest effort Dimming Awe, the Light is Raw, the 27-year-old producer and composer continues dissolving the borders between his disparate-yet-beloved psych, hip hop, and ambient influences. Unlike his debut LP Lava Diviner, which peaked and valley-ed through a narrative arc, Dimming Awe focuses on the artist's ever-unfolding, present state of mind. As a former jazz student, spiritual/free jazz philosophy regarding what he calls “emergent” music has increasingly become a guiding light when he creates. "The more emergent I let my music be when I'm making it, the more I like the result, it feels like a truer reflection. I feel like I am getting closer to doing that with computer-made music," he says. "This album is a document of what I do, not a statement in any explicit way. I feel like I'm moving closer to a jazz underpinning that I've always felt, philosophically more than aesthetically…making music feels more like exhaling as I grow older.”

An early, transitional cut by The Nightcrawlers, recorded as a duo shortly before Dave Lunt completed the trio, “Luv-Li-Musik” (from 1982’s cassette Synthmania), released as a digital single from Anthology Recordings The Biophonic Boombox Recordings, showcases an unusually harder edge for the act’s patented electronic kozmik drift. That’s not to say that the Gulch Brothers had detoured into a precursor of fluorescent rave ala Manuel Göttsching’s E2-E4 (recorded a year earlier, and released two years later). Rather, the interlocking motifs of the track highlight the group’s interest in pattern music ala Steve Reich, who was an influence not only on The Nightcrawlers’ beloved Berliner Schule (of which Göttsching was a member), but also on the Philadelphia experimental scene centered around University of Pennsylvania radio station WXPN and Philadelphia’s Painted Bride Art Center. In it, you can hear the distinct quality each one of the two brought to the aggregation: rising and falling ambient beds, mysterious and lush, pillowing the intensity of Peter Gulch's hypnotically repetitive patterns, while Tom Gulch's minor key soloing pierces through, capturing the imagination.  So in tune to the talents of one another were The Nightcrawlers that “Luv-Li-Musik” is an improvisation that could easily pass as composition. And with the addition of Lunt and his experimental background, they would soon commence launch into the deepest regions of space.

Daughter - Love (Nedry Remix)

Azure Blue is the first solo project of Tobias Isaksson. Based in Stockholm Sweden. A trilogy of dream pop albums was released from 2011 to 2015 and with a collective of musicians by his side Isaksson did extensive world tours covering most of Europe and the US East Coast. In 2013 Isaksson started a project of electronic dance music called Nite Flights which released two EPs in 2014 and the album Jet Lag in 2016 before he returned as Azure Blue with a more distinct electronic sound with 2018 album Fast Falls the Eventide. In 2019 he returned to writing heartfelt lyrics and making melodic dreamy pop with the romantic album Images of You.
